If you are a 22-year-old with a 72 percent BCom, a GMAT in the 650s and an offer-less summer, you have probably noticed that the Financial Times keeps putting a Swiss university at the top of its Masters in Management table while almost nobody in your WhatsApp groups has heard of it. That silence is the opportunity, and also the warning. The St Gallen SIM from India is a very good programme with a very specific door, and the door is not the GMAT.
What does the St Gallen SIM actually cost?
The University of St.Gallen's own admission page lists a CHF 268 application fee and does not print tuition on that page. A third-party fee breakdown on MiM in Europe puts tuition at CHF 10,673 for the full 18-month programme, which is three semesters at CHF 3,557.50 each, and says a tuition increase took effect in August 2026. Treat that as a working number and confirm it with HSG before you budget.
Living costs are the real bill. The same page cites CHF 24,000 to 30,000 a year and a total attendance cost of roughly CHF 45,000 to 55,000. That is far above WU Vienna, which we covered in our WU Vienna analysis, but it is still well below the tuition-plus-rent total at most private European schools. Our MiM cost comparison for Indian applicants puts the spread in context.
Is the ranking real, and what does the salary figure mean?
The MiM in Europe profile reports an FT 2025 weighted salary of US$139,921 three years after graduation and 98 percent employment at three months, from a cohort of about 52. Two cautions. First, that page itself corrects an earlier claim: HEC Paris reports US$141,611 in the same edition, so St Gallen is second on pay, not first. Second, the figure is a three-year-out average, not a starting salary, and it is pulled up by Swiss and London bases that pay in a stronger currency than most of Europe.
The same source gives the first-role split as about 42 percent consulting, 22 percent financial services, 12 percent technology and 10 percent industrials, with roughly 60 percent of the class working in Switzerland, Germany or Austria. The page does not cite a placement report for that split, so read it as indicative.
How does St Gallen choose students?
This is where the programme differs from a GMAT-first school. The official admission page publishes the weights: video interview 35 percent, extracurricular activities and work experience 25 percent, GMAT or GRE 20 percent, undergraduate average 20 percent. No minimum test score is stated. Admitted students on the MiM in Europe profile cluster between 650 and 740, averaging about 680, but HSG itself does not publish that.
Two consequences. A 700 GMAT cannot rescue a weak interview, and a 660 will not sink a strong one. Also, activities count only with uploaded proof, and you need two referees, one academic and one professional, who may be phoned for 10 to 15 minutes. If your extracurriculars live in your head rather than in certificates, start collecting documents now.
What is the Indian-specific catch?
The eligibility rule is the one most Indian applicants miss. HSG asks for a bachelor's in business administration or economics, or similar, with at least 180 ECTS, including at least 60 ECTS in business or economics and 6 in mathematics or statistics. Prior accounting knowledge is mandatory; otherwise you sit the HSG accountancy exam. A BTech with two management electives will struggle on the 60-ECTS line, so ask HSG for a credit evaluation of your transcript before you pay anything.
Deadlines run in four rounds: 4 November 2026, 31 January, 31 March and 30 April 2027, with decisions about a month later. Naming a fallback programme (MiMM, MGM or MACFin) is only possible if you apply before 31 January. Round 1 is already close, so for most readers the realistic targets are rounds 2 and 3.
If you are a BCom or BBA graduate with 0 to 1 years of experience
You are the closest fit to the intake, since the average entry age is about 23 per the MiM in Europe profile. Spend your effort on proof-backed activities and on the video interview. A 680 GMAT with a student-run finance society, documented, beats an unevidenced 720.
If you are an engineer thinking about a switch into consulting
Be careful. The ECTS and accounting rules are real hurdles, and the programme's strength is strategy and international management for people who studied business. If you already have a job offer path in India through campus placement, the Swiss route needs a clear reason: you want a European consulting seat, not just a foreign degree.
What happens after graduation?
This is the weakest link for Indians. Switzerland offers a single non-renewable six-month permit to look for work after graduating from a recognised Swiss university, per the MiM in Europe permit guide (citing article 21(3) of the foreign nationals law). You must show funds, about CHF 10,500 according to ETH Zurich guidance quoted there, and may work around 15 hours a week. To convert to a B or L work permit, the employer applies to the canton, and the permit counts against the annual quota for non-EU workers. The waiver removes the Swiss-first priority test only if the job is of significant economic interest; the page gives no salary threshold. Verify all of this with the State Secretariat for Migration, because rules change.
The honest read: a McKinsey Zurich offer clears this bar more easily than a mid-size industrial role. A German or London first job is a common fallback, but each has its own visa rules.
Common questions
Is the St Gallen SIM worth it for Indian students? It is worth it if you want continental European consulting, banking or industry and can document your profile. It is a poor bet if your plan depends on a guaranteed Swiss work permit.
What GMAT score do I need for St Gallen SIM? HSG states no minimum. Third-party data suggests 650 to 740 with an average around 680. HSG uses your total score, counts your best attempt, and needs scores under five years old.
Does St Gallen accept GRE? Yes, per HSG. Both verbal and quantitative sections are decisive. Send scores before the round deadline using the recipient codes on the admission page.
Do I need German? English is the language of instruction and no English certificate is required at application, though HSG recommends C1. You must also complete two foreign-language courses during the degree.
What this means for Indian applicants
Treat St Gallen as a target, not a safety. Pair it with one cheaper option such as WU Vienna and one higher-brand option such as HEC Paris MiM, so the ECTS rule and the permit risk do not leave you with a single path. Run a profile evaluation to test your transcript against the 60-ECTS line, then use application editing for your CV in the SIM template. For the wider map, see our MBA and MiM abroad hub and the MBA and MiM service page. If you are still deciding between degree types, read our guide to MiM versus MBA for a 22-year-old engineer.
