Two Singapore MBAs sit S$14,000 apart, while Hong Kong runs a different visa clock

NUS vs Nanyang vs HKUST MBA for Indian Applicants

If you have a 690 GMAT, five years at an Indian IT services firm and three Asian MBA tabs open at 1 a.m., you have probably noticed that every guide calls all three "excellent" and none of them tells you which one to drop. This NUS vs Nanyang vs HKUST India comparison does that. It puts the fees, cohort sizes, salary evidence and visa rules side by side, and it is blunt about where the data is thin.

The three programmes at a glance

Dimension NUS MBA Nanyang MBA HKUST full-time MBA
Tuition, latest intake listed S$106,849.76 incl. GST (Aug 2027) S$85,280 plus 9% GST, about S$92,955 (Jul 2027) HK$600,000, about Rs 74 lakh
Length 12 to 17 months 12 months, three trimesters 12-month accelerated or 16-month track
Class size About 120, 92% international About 90 (third-party estimate) Over 210 in the 2024 intake, about 50% international
Average GMAT 670 Not published by NTU 660
Home job market Singapore, ASEAN Singapore, ASEAN, Greater China Hong Kong, Mainland China

Fees come from NUS, NTU and HKUST. Class profile figures are relayed by third-party sites, and none of the three schools publishes an Indian-specific share, so ask each admissions office for its current report.

What each one costs in rupees

At roughly Rs 62 to 65 per Singapore dollar, NUS tuition lands near Rs 66 to 69 lakh and Nanyang near Rs 58 to 60 lakh. The Nanyang saving is real, about S$13,900 or 13 percent, but it is not the "half the price" some forum threads suggest. HKUST at HK$600,000 is about Rs 74 lakh at 12.34 rupees per Hong Kong dollar, and it asks for a non-refundable HK$65,000 deposit on acceptance.

Add housing. Singapore and Hong Kong are both expensive cities, and a 12-month programme saves you real living costs against a 21-month US MBA. That is the genuine Asian cost advantage, more than the tuition line.

The salary evidence is weaker than it looks

Here is the contrarian part. The three headline salary numbers are not comparable, and quoting them side by side is how applicants get misled.

NUS's class of 2024 average is quoted at about US$88,002, with 93 percent receiving an offer within three months. Nanyang's 2024 career report is quoted at a weighted post-MBA salary of US$158,111 and 92 percent employed within three months (mim-essay). That Nanyang figure is far above NUS and almost certainly reflects total compensation or a different weighting, not base pay. HKUST's most recent report I could verify is the class of 2022, with a mean base of US$116,302 on a PPP-converted basis and 86 percent employed.

Three reports, three methodologies, three years. Do not conclude that Nanyang pays 80 percent more than NUS. Ask each school for base salary, in local currency, by sector, for the latest class. If a school will not give you that, you have learned something.

Singapore visa: the Employment Pass decides, not the degree

Neither NUS nor Nanyang gives you work rights. Your first job does, through an Employment Pass. MOM sets a salary floor that rises with age and a 40-point COMPASS test (MOM). For new applications from 1 January 2027, the floor is S$6,000 a month at age 23, S$7,750 at age 30 and S$9,000 at age 35, with financial services higher at S$8,541 for a 30-year-old. You graduate after that date, so those numbers are yours.

Our NUS visa and outcomes analysis shows why this matters: a class-average base can clear the floor for a 30-year-old by a thin margin and miss the financial services floor. MOM looks at fixed monthly salary, so a large bonus does not help Stage 1. The same logic applies to Nanyang, whose own detail is in our Nanyang fees and recruiting post.

Hong Kong visa: a different mechanism

HKUST graduates use the Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates scheme, which normally grants an initial 24-month stay (Hong Kong Immigration Department). If you apply within six months of your graduation date, you need no job offer. After that you need an offer at degree-holder level with market-level pay. The scheme is quota-free and not limited to specific sectors, and the qualification must involve at least one academic year of study.

That is structurally friendlier than Singapore's salary-floor test, because you get two years to find a job rather than needing one in hand. The catch is the market itself. Financial services took 39 percent of HKUST's class of 2022, and roughly 58 percent of jobs were in Hong Kong and 25 percent in Mainland China, per the figures in our ISB vs HKUST comparison. Mandarin or Cantonese widens your options a lot.

If you are an IT services engineer targeting a consulting or tech switch

Singapore is your market, and the choice is between NUS and Nanyang. Nanyang's industry mix leans technology at 25 percent, financial services 16 percent and consulting 14 percent, per the 2024 report. NUS has the larger alumni bench and a class of about 120. If your age at graduation will be 29 or above, pick the school whose recruiters will give you a written base salary that clears the 2027 floor with margin. Our application editing team spends most of its time helping this profile find a story beyond "delivery to strategy".

If you are a banker or CFA targeting Asian capital markets

HKUST deserves a serious look. Financial services was its largest sector, Hong Kong is a regional trading hub, and the IANG route gives you more time than an Employment Pass offer-in-hand. Pay the extra tuition only if your target is a Hong Kong or Mainland seat. If it is Singapore finance, the higher financial services Employment Pass floor is the number to model first.

If you plan to return to India after two years

Be honest about this one. NUS is better known to Indian recruiters than the other two, and our ISB vs NUS comparison covers when ISB beats all of them for an India-bound career. None of the three has the on-campus Indian recruiting that ISB offers. You would be building your own network from Singapore or Hong Kong.

Common questions

Is NUS better than Nanyang for Indians? On brand recognition in India, yes, and the class is larger. On cost, Nanyang is about 13 percent cheaper. Nanyang suits you if you value a smaller cohort and faculty access, and NUS if you want the bigger alumni network.

Is HKUST worth it for Indian students? Only if you want Hong Kong or Mainland China roles, especially in finance. The tuition is the highest of the three, and Indian recruiters know it less than NUS. The IANG visa is a genuine advantage.

Which Asian MBA has the best stay-back option? Hong Kong's IANG gives up to 24 months without a job offer if you apply within six months of graduating. Singapore has no post-study work visa, so the job offer is the visa.

What GMAT score do I need? NUS reports a class average of 670, HKUST about 660, and NTU publishes no minimum, only a "competitive" score and two years of experience.

What this means for Indian applicants

Pick the city before the school. Write down where you want to be employed in 2029, then check that the base salary of your target role clears the relevant floor or fits the visa mechanism. If the city is Singapore, choose between NUS and Nanyang on class size and fee. If it is Hong Kong, HKUST is the logical choice. A profile evaluation will show where your GMAT and work experience sit against each school, and our wider MBA abroad support covers shortlisting and applications.
