If you are a 22-year-old with a 70 percent BCom or BTech, a GMAT you can push past 630, and a family that winced at the EUR 18,000 to 40,000 fee lines on every other European MiM page, this post is for you. Vienna is the programme those fee tables quietly skip. The WU Vienna MiM from India costs less in tuition than a month of rent in Paris, and it still sits 18th in the Financial Times Masters in Management ranking. The honest question is why that is not more crowded.
Why is the WU Vienna MiM so cheap for Indians?
WU is a public university. The MiM in Europe fee breakdown lists tuition for non-EU students at EUR 726.72 per semester, plus a compulsory EUR 26.20 student union fee. Over four semesters that is roughly EUR 2,900 in tuition. EU and EEA students pay half. The same page puts the median across 80 euro-priced MiMs at EUR 23,157, so WU charges about one-eighth of the typical figure.
Our caution: you will see lower numbers on some consultancy pages, which quote EUR 386 per semester and claim "no non-EU surcharge". Treat those as unreliable. Confirm the current rate with WU admissions before you budget.
Tuition is not the whole bill. Vienna living costs run roughly EUR 10,000 to 12,000 a year, and the mandatory exchange semester can add more. A realistic two-year total is in the EUR 25,000 to 30,000 range, which is still well below Bocconi or HEC once you add their tuition. See our Bocconi MiM breakdown for the comparison.
What is the programme, exactly?
The flagship is the MSc International Management / CEMS, a 24-month degree. It belongs to the CEMS alliance of 30-plus business schools, and the WU admissions page says you must rank 15 partner universities for the compulsory semester abroad, and you cannot change the list after submitting. IIM Calcutta is the only Indian CEMS member, which is worth knowing if you hope to return home with a recognised network.
FT 2025 data on the MiM in Europe profile gives a weighted three-year salary of about USD 119,000 and 95 percent employment at three months. WU's own figure is 97 percent, with 75 percent joining multinationals. About 54 percent of the cohort is international. The Indian share is not published, so do not assume a visible Indian community.
If you are an IT services engineer with 1 to 2 years of work experience
Your edge is that WU wants 0 to 2 years of experience, not the 3 to 5 that M7 MBAs expect. Your problem is that a TCS or Infosys title does not signal international management on its own. Build the application around a cross-border project, a client in Germany or the Nordics, or any role where you coordinated across time zones. The admissions interview is a group business case with an hour of preparation, so practise case structuring, not just your story.
If you are a BCom, BBA or CA-track graduate straight out of college
You are the natural fit. The programme accepts business and economics degrees and rewards a clean academic record. The risk is the GMAT. The MiM in Europe profile reports WU as GMAT-required with no GRE alternative, a minimum of 600 classic (565 on GMAT Focus), and self-reported admits clustering around 630 to 640. Some third-party pages say GRE is accepted. Do not rely on them; check WU directly. If you are scoring 600 on a mock, delay a year and fix quant before you apply.
What is the catch?
Three. First, the deadline is early. The WU page lists a final deadline of 8 January for the 2026/27 intake, and interview rounds in late November and mid-March, so the 2027/28 cycle effectively starts in the autumn. A consultancy page quoting 15 March is out of date.
Second, CEMS expects a second foreign language beyond English at B1 level by graduation (per a third-party summary; confirm with WU). An Indian applicant with no German, French or Spanish should start now, because it is a graduation condition, not a nice-to-have.
Third, Vienna is not a recruiting hub for Indian-origin consulting or tech roles. The cohort goes to multinationals, banks and industry, many of them German-speaking. If your goal is McKinsey London or a Big Tech product role, this is the wrong door.
Who should skip WU Vienna?
Skip it if you cannot realistically reach a 600 GMAT within one cycle, if you refuse to study a second language, or if your only goal is a brand that Indian recruiters recognise instantly. WU's reputation is strong in German-speaking Europe and inside the CEMS network, but a hiring manager in Mumbai may not know it. The trade is simple: you give up name recognition at home and gain a very low cost base, a respected FT rank, and a credible route into continental Europe. For a family funding the degree from savings rather than a large loan, that trade is often rational. For a student chasing a six-figure first salary in London or New York, it is not.
What happens after graduation?
Austria's route is the Red-White-Red Card. The ABA Immigration Guide says third-country nationals who graduated from an Austrian university in the last twelve months can apply, the salary must match the applicable collective agreement, and the card is valid for up to two years, tied to one employer at first. That tie matters: a bad first job is hard to leave. We could not confirm the length of the post-study job-search permit from these sources, so verify it with the Austrian authorities before you commit.
Common questions
Is the WU Vienna MiM worth it for Indian students? If your target is a European multinational, finance or supply-chain role, and you can learn a second language, the cost-to-ranking ratio is hard to beat. If you want global consulting brand value, it is not.
Does WU Vienna accept GRE? The best-sourced answer says GMAT only. A few consultancy pages say otherwise. Email WU admissions before you take the wrong test.
Can I get a scholarship? The MiM in Europe page names no WU-specific scholarship amounts. With tuition near EUR 2,900, the real saving is already built in, so plan for living costs instead.
How does it compare with ESCP or IE? Those charge many times more. Our IE Madrid analysis shows what that extra money buys, and what it does not.
What this means for Indian applicants
If budget is the binding constraint, WU belongs on your shortlist before a EUR 40,000 school does. Pair it with one or two higher-fee schools so the GMAT and language rules do not leave you with a single option. Start with a profile evaluation to test your GMAT target against the 630 to 640 cluster, then sharpen your motivation letter with application editing.
