At HEC, the MiM alumnus earns about 70 percent of the MBA alumnus's pay

MiM vs MBA for Indian Graduates: When Does MiM Actually Win

If you are 22, three semesters from graduating with a 7.4 CGPA, and you have just seen a US MBA quoted at Rs 2.2 crore, you are probably wondering whether a one-year MiM is the sensible version of the same dream or a consolation prize. The honest answer on MiM vs MBA India is that the two degrees are not substitutes. They are sold to different people at different career ages, and the salary data only makes sense once you stop comparing them line for line.

What the salary data actually says

The most useful like-for-like comparison is one school offering both degrees. HEC Paris is the cleanest case. The Financial Times 2025 MiM ranking puts HEC alumni at $141,611, the highest of any European MiM, measured three years after graduation. The FT 2026 MBA ranking puts HEC MBA alumni at about $201,000 on the same weighted, three-years-out basis. So the HEC MiM alumnus earns roughly 70 percent of the HEC MBA alumnus.

Now widen the lens. The average for the FT's top 20 MiM programmes is $115,012, with a 55 percent average salary jump over pre-degree pay. Harvard sits at $259,874 on the MBA side. Against Harvard, a typical top-20 MiM is under half. Against a European one-year MBA such as Esade ($206,000) or INSEAD ($218,000), it is closer to 55 to 70 percent.

Two caveats matter. These are different ranking years, and the FT weights salaries by purchasing power. More important, an MBA alumnus three years out is usually about eight years into a career, while a MiM alumnus is about four. Part of the "gap" is simply age.

Year one is where the gap is widest

The Harvard Class of 2025 posted a $184,500 median base salary plus a $30,000 signing bonus, with 22 percent going into tech and 21 percent into consulting. European MiM graduates, by one alumni-run estimate, start between 60,000 and 80,000 euros, and most classmates reach 90,000 to 130,000 by year three. That source cites no underlying survey, so treat it as an informed guess, not a statistic.

Read that again: the MiM line does not close on the MBA line in absolute terms. It grows faster in percentage terms, because it starts lower and younger. If a consultant tells you MiM "catches up", ask them which year and which sector. In our reading of the published data, no top MiM catches the top MBA in pay at any point in the first five years.

The cost side is where MiM wins

At top schools the GMAC summary of the FT data puts MiM programme cost at $35,000 to $70,000. HEC's two-year MiM works out to about Rs 60 lakh in tuition for an Indian student, as we break down in our HEC Paris MiM guide. A no-aid US M7 MBA runs Rs 2.15 to 2.30 crore all-in, and the real economic cost reaches Rs 2.4 to 2.5 crore once two years of foregone salary are counted, per our MBA abroad cost breakdown.

So the MiM costs roughly a quarter to a third as much, for around 70 percent of the salary at the comparable European school. That ratio is the real MiM argument. It is a cost-efficiency argument, not a pay argument.

If you are a fresher or have under two years of work experience

This is the profile where the comparison barely applies. MBA classes are built around three to five years of experience, and a 23-year-old with a 7.4 CGPA will struggle to win a seat at an M7 whatever the GMAT. MiM is built for you. Your foregone salary is close to zero, so the whole cost is tuition and living. Start with our guide to applying for MiM in Round 1.

If you are an IT services engineer with three to four years in

You are the borderline case. You can apply to either, and the decision turns on target sector. If you want MBB consulting or private equity in the US, an MBA is the only door; Harvard's class had 14 percent going into private equity alone. If you want a European consulting, banking or strategy job and are open to Paris, Milan or London, a MiM costs you less and keeps two years of Indian salary growth intact. If you are unsure, run your numbers through a profile evaluation before paying any application fees.

If you are a five-plus-year professional with a 700 GMAT

Do not drop to a MiM to save money. You will be the oldest person in a cohort recruited for graduate-entry roles, and employers will price you as a graduate. The MBA, including the one-year European and Asian options that cost far less than US programmes, is the right instrument.

Where policy changes the maths

Two rules tilt the comparison, and both affect MBA and MiM students the same way.

The UK Graduate Route is being cut from two years to 18 months for applications submitted on or after 1 January 2027 by bachelor's and master's graduates. A one-year UK MiM or MBA now buys 18 months to find a sponsor, not 24.

In the US, the $100,000 H-1B fee applies to new petitions filed on or after 21 September 2025 for people outside the country. Changes of status for people already in the US, such as F-1 to H-1B, are exempt, and a July 2026 university update says the fee is currently not being charged, with its legal status unsettled. Employers are cautious anyway. A US MBA at Rs 2 crore plus is a harder bet on a sponsor than it was in 2024, which strengthens the case for Europe-based MiM and MBA routes. Check the current position before you commit.

Common questions

Is a MiM worth it without work experience? Yes, if your target is European or Asian graduate-entry roles. You pay roughly $35,000 to $70,000 at top schools, forgo little income, and enter at the entry-level scale the programme was designed for.

Can I do a MiM and then an MBA later? Yes, and it is a common path. MBA admissions committees expect three to five years of work experience, so most people work first. Some find by then that the MiM jump (55 percent on average in the FT top 20) has already done the job.

Which pays more, MiM or MBA? The MBA, at every comparable school and every checkpoint in the published data. The MiM is cheaper per dollar of salary.

Does a MiM help with PR in Europe? It gives you a post-study job-search permit, not PR. Rules differ by country and change often, so verify with the national immigration authority.

What this means for Indian applicants

Choose by career age, not by prestige. Under two years of work experience, take the MiM seriously and compare it with other MiMs, not with Harvard. At three to four years, decide your sector first and let the degree follow. At five or more, the MBA is the right tool. The MiM does not "win" on pay, but on a year-one-to-year-five cost-per-rupee basis it very often does. If you want a second opinion on where your own profile sits, our MBA abroad hub and MiM and MBA services are the starting points, and an application editing review is worth it before the first round closes.
