Bengaluru · Tech, product, and engineering applicants
Bengaluru is where Indian tech careers are built. That also means the city sends the largest and most over-represented applicant pool to top US programmes every year. Every adcom has read hundreds of Flipkart PM stories and IIT-graduate-turned-SDE narratives. Pegasus has guided Bengaluru applicants for 13 years. We know the positioning work required to stand out in that pool.
Get a free profile evaluation →A top 10 US MBA class in the 2026 cycle has roughly 120 to 180 applicants who currently live in Bengaluru. By the time adcoms finish reading your application, they have already seen a dozen engineers from Amazon, a dozen PMs from Flipkart, eight founders from seed-stage startups, and five IIT-BITS graduates now working at Google Bengaluru. Being technically strong is table stakes for this pool. The applicants who get in are the ones who frame the story in a way the modal applicant cannot.
For our Bengaluru product manager clients, the positioning question is almost always about ownership depth. The PM who can name a specific feature shipped, a specific metric moved, and a specific business decision they owned reads differently from the PM who describes responsibilities in abstract. We spend the first three weeks of our SoP work extracting those specifics.
For Bengaluru founder and senior engineer applicants, the story is often simpler but the essay work is harder because founder-narratives tend to drift into the visionary register. Adcoms at Stanford GSB and HBS have explicitly said in recent info sessions that they prefer concrete, grounded founder stories over aspirational ones. That tracks with what we see in our own admits.
PMs at Flipkart, Myntra, Swiggy, Razorpay, PhonePe, CRED, Meesho. Typically 3 to 5 years of experience. Target HBS, Stanford GSB, Sloan, Haas, Wharton, Kellogg MMM.
SDEs and senior engineers at Amazon Bengaluru, Google, Microsoft, Uber, Atlassian. Strong technical profiles. Target MBA or MS CS programmes.
Early-stage founders who have raised seed to Series A. Sabbatical applications at HBS, Stanford, Wharton, Columbia with entrepreneurship tracks.
McKinsey Digital, BCG X, Deloitte Digital Bengaluru. Hybrid consulting-tech profiles. Target Wharton, Kellogg, Booth, INSEAD.
Applicants with an IIM Bangalore MBA pursuing a second degree (usually MFin, MS Business Analytics, or senior-executive MBAs). Target LBS, MIT Sloan Fellows, Stanford MSx.
Graduates of IISc or applicants with strong research publications. Target MS and PhD programmes at Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, CMU.
Aggregated across the last three admissions cycles. Pseudonymised at the applicant level.
Our Bengaluru client base leans toward engineering and computer science graduates from IISc, IIM Bangalore, RVCE, PES University, BMS College, MS Ramaiah, and NITs outside Karnataka who moved to Bengaluru for work. For product and tech, we see graduates from IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and BITS Pilani who relocated to the city. On the business side, XIME Bangalore, IIM Bangalore PGP alumni, and Christ University undergrads come through.
This is the central positioning call for the city. Roughly 45 percent of our Bengaluru clients target MBA programmes, 35 percent go for Masters in Management at European schools or MS in Computer Science at top US universities (CMU, Georgia Tech, Stanford, MIT), and 20 percent pursue specialist Masters like MSc Business Analytics or MFin. The right answer depends on career trajectory. A senior engineer with 6 years of experience at Flipkart is not better served by an MS CS. A 24-year-old SDE at a startup may be.
Favourably, if the story is sharp. Bengaluru product managers often have technical depth, real product ownership experience, and cross-functional leadership stories that US adcoms value. The failure mode is when the SoP reads like a promotion narrative instead of a career thesis. Our PM clients typically rewrite the first draft three times before the story stops sounding like a LinkedIn profile.
Target 730 or higher. Bengaluru engineers are over-represented in top MBA pools, particularly at HBS, Stanford, Sloan, Haas, and Ross. A 720 is workable but puts pressure on the essays and interviews. Candidates who score 740+ see their admit chances improve materially. For MS programmes at Stanford CS, CMU, and MIT, GRE scores matter more than GMAT and the target is 330+ combined with a 168+ on quant.
Yes. Many of our Bengaluru clients run parallel applications to ISB PGP and US or European MBAs. We have a dedicated ISB practice. Read our full ISB PGP admissions guide if you are considering the programme. Applicants who apply to ISB in Round 1 and then US programmes in December have a solid decision framework by January, which is the right time to commit to a path.
