If you are a 28-year-old product manager in Bengaluru with a 700 GMAT, and the HEC Paris and INSEAD tabs have been open side by side for a week, the question is not which logo is better. It is which one fits the job you want, and how much salary you can afford to skip. This is the HEC vs INSEAD India decision, built from the schools' own numbers rather than brochure language.
What do HEC Paris and INSEAD actually cost?
INSEAD's financing page lists tuition of €109,860 for the August 2026 and January 2027 intakes, with estimated living costs of €30,000 at Fontainebleau and €32,000 in Singapore. That is about €140,000 to €142,000 all in, for a programme the school describes as ten months of study.
HEC is listed at €102,000 in tuition and roughly €127,300 all in, which includes about €25,300 of living costs over 16 months. The same source says January entrants can choose a 12-month accelerated format. Confirm the intake year and fee directly with HEC, because the page itself is inconsistent on dates.
So HEC is cheaper by roughly €12,500 to €14,500 on paper. Then add time. HEC runs about six months longer on the standard track. If you earn ₹30 lakh a year today, six months out of work costs about ₹15 lakh, which can wipe out the tuition gap at current exchange rates. Check the live rate before you budget.
What do the employment reports say?
INSEAD's Class of 2025 had 929 graduates. Clear Admit's summary reports a mean salary of €102,200, a median of €100,000 and a median signing bonus of €28,900. Consulting took 50 percent of the class, technology, media and telecom 18 percent and financial services 15 percent. McKinsey, BCG and Bain top the employer list. About 23 percent of graduates relocated to Asia, though the report gives no India-specific figure.
HEC's own statistics page says 75 percent of the Class of 2025 accepted an offer within three months, 52 percent of them in Europe, and the cohort has 49 nationalities. It does not publish a salary on that page. A third-party summary puts the mean at $123,170 and the median base at $115,255, with technology at 27 percent, finance 24 percent and consulting 15 percent. That page contradicts itself on consulting elsewhere, so treat the sector split as approximate and ask HEC for the full report.
Do not subtract one headline from the other. INSEAD's 81 percent counts graduates with at least one offer within three months, HEC's 75 percent counts accepted offers, and the currencies differ. Compare the shape of the placement, not the decimals.
If you are targeting MBB consulting
INSEAD is the sharper tool. Half the class goes into consulting and the three MBB firms lead the employer list. HEC's consulting share is unclear in the data available, and the third-party figure of 15 percent is well below INSEAD's 50. If your plan is McKinsey, BCG or Bain, the evidence favours INSEAD, and the shorter programme also protects your earning curve.
If you are in tech or product and want a European base
HEC's sector mix leans towards technology, and a 16-month programme gives room for an internship, which is how most career switchers actually land a first role. INSEAD's tech and media share is 18 percent, with a mean of €95,500 according to the Clear Admit summary. If you are switching from engineering into product or strategy and need a summer to prove yourself, the longer clock is a feature, not a cost. See our HEC Paris MBA guide for Indian applicants for the structure.
If you want to stay in France after graduating
France offers a 12-month Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour to graduates with at least a Bac+3, and then the Passeport Talent track for those who find a qualifying job. A Meridiane guide says the salary floor is 1.5 times the monthly minimum wage, about €2,700 gross a month at the 2026 rate, though it cites a slightly different figure elsewhere, so check the official labour ministry page. It also says you must already be legally in France, and cannot apply from abroad under this route.
Here is the honest caveat. HEC is a French institution, and the APS is built for graduates of French programmes. I could not verify from public pages whether INSEAD's Fontainebleau or Singapore cohort gets the same treatment, so ask the school and the French consulate before you plan around it. Our note on the multi-year French student visa covers the entry side.
What this means for Indian applicants
The pattern is simple. Pick INSEAD if consulting is the target and every month of salary matters. Pick HEC if you need an internship runway, want a technology or finance base in Europe, or can use the January accelerated route. Neither school makes India-specific placement data easy to find, so ask both admissions teams how many Indian graduates took roles in India versus Europe. For wider options, read HEC vs IESE vs IE and our INSEAD admissions guide.
Both programmes sit well above ₹1 crore all in, so the loan math matters as much as the brand. Before you rank them, build one spreadsheet per school: all-in cost, months out of work, expected first-year pay in your target sector, and the visa path you can verify. If a line is a guess, mark it as a guess. Whichever line a school loses on is the question to put to its admissions team. Our MBA abroad hub has the wider comparison, and a profile evaluation will tell you which application you can actually win.
Common questions
Is HEC Paris cheaper than INSEAD? On listed tuition, yes: €102,000 against €109,860. Including living costs, roughly €127,300 against €140,000 or more. But HEC's standard track is about six months longer, so forgone salary can erase the gap.
Which has better placement for Indians? Neither publishes India-specific data on the pages I checked. INSEAD reports 23 percent of its class moving to Asia, and HEC reports 52 percent of accepted offers in Europe. Ask both schools for Indian-citizen outcomes.
Do I need French for HEC? Instruction is in English, so French is not required to study. It helps for jobs inside France, and the Passeport Talent route needs a French employer.
Can I get a French work permit after INSEAD? I could not confirm this from public sources. Verify with INSEAD and French authorities before you plan around it.
