If you are a 33-year-old delivery head at an IT services firm, nine years in, holding a good GMAT score and a vague sense that ISB is the safe answer, this post is for you. The question "ISB vs IIM Calcutta MBA Ex" sounds like a brand contest. It is mostly an experience-band contest. The two programmes are both one year long, but they seat different people, and a senior manager can end up either the most experienced person in the room or one of the least. Here is what the published numbers say, with the gaps flagged.
Question 1: Who actually sits in each class?
IIM Calcutta's MBAEx Class of 2026 has 90 students with an average of 7.8 years of work experience, according to GOALisB's programme summary. It splits as 47 percent with 5 to 7 years, 36 percent with 7 to 10 years and 18 percent with more than 10. The minimum is five years of full-time managerial or professional experience, and the class averaged 696 on the GMAT. GOALisB is an admissions consultancy, so confirm these figures with IIM Calcutta before you rely on them.
ISB's PGP is a different animal. Its Class of 2026 has 826 students across Hyderabad and Mohali, with an average work experience of 4.02 years, per our ISB class profile breakdown. The minimum is two years.
So a nine-year manager is firmly mid-pack at MBAEx and a clear outlier at ISB PGP. That is not automatically bad. It is a fact you should plan around, because your peer group shapes your network, your recommenders and who refers you for roles.
Question 2: What do the placement numbers say?
IIM Calcutta MBAEx, Class of 2025: average CTC INR 35 lakh, median INR 32 lakh, highest INR 125 lakh, with IT and ITES at 31.9 percent and consulting at 18.3 percent of offers, again per GOALisB. We could not find a Class of 2026 MBAEx figure in a source we could verify. A Cracku roundup of old IIM placements lists MBAEx but gives no programme-level numbers, so treat the 2025 data as the latest available.
ISB PGP, Class of 2026: 1,117 offers, average CTC INR 37.29 lakh up 11 percent, highest INR 1.56 crore, according to Business Today's report of 6 April 2026. The same report names McKinsey, BCG, Bain and Deloitte among recruiters and gives no consulting percentage. No median was reported.
You cannot compare these cleanly. Different cohort years, different programmes, one with a median and one without. What you can say is that both land in the mid-30s lakh on average, so salary alone does not separate them.
Question 3: What does each cost?
MBAEx was INR 33.5 lakh for 2025-26, per GOALisB. That covers tuition, material, on-campus accommodation and the economy airfare for the international immersion at a partner school. Payment runs in four instalments.
ISB's published PGP tuition is INR 25.62 lakh, but the realistic first-year bill with admission fee, GST, hostel and living costs is INR 43 to 47 lakh, as we show in the ISB full-cost guide. On sticker price the programmes look far apart. On an all-in basis the gap narrows, though ISB still costs more. Compare the same bundle on both sides before you decide.
Question 4: Is PGP even the right ISB programme for a senior manager?
Often it is not. ISB runs PGPMAX for people with 10 or more years of experience, a 15-month modular format with 12 on-campus weeks and no GMAT requirement, per the ISB PGPMAX page. ISB does not publish a PGPMAX class size or average experience on that page, so we cannot compare it directly with MBAEx.
The honest framing: with 7 to 9 years, you sit in the gap between the two ISB programmes. PGP expects you to blend in with a younger class. PGPMAX expects 10 years and is built around people who keep working. MBAEx, with a 5-year floor and a 7.8-year average, was designed for exactly your band. We unpack the PGPMAX trade-offs in our PGPMAX versus executive MBA abroad post.
If you are an IT services manager with eight to ten years
You are the profile IIM Calcutta's 31.9 percent IT and ITES share suggests is common in the class. At ISB PGP you would compete in a 826-seat cohort where the average person is five years younger. If your goal is a move into product, strategy or a general management role in India, MBAEx puts you beside peers at your level. If your goal is the widest recruiter bench, ISB's volume of 1,117 offers is the argument.
If you are a finance or consulting professional at seven years
The ISB vs IIM Calcutta finance-track comparison covers the two-year PGP side. For the one-year executive route, MBAEx reports 18.3 percent consulting, a modest share. ISB lists three MBB firms among recruiters but no seat count, so neither school gives you a number you can plan around. Ask each admissions office for MBB conversion data directly.
If you are a founder or family-business manager
Neither programme relies on campus placement for you. Look at the cohort and the alumni network instead. A smaller class of 90 means more face time per person; ISB's scale means more alumni to call. Our ISB vs IIM Bangalore decision framework applies the same logic.
Common questions
Is IIM Calcutta MBAEx better than ISB PGP? Not on any measure we can verify. Average CTCs are in the same band, and the programmes seat different experience levels. The better question is which cohort you want to be part of.
Does MBAEx need a GMAT? Yes. GOALisB reports that a GMAT from a test centre is required and online GMAT is not accepted, and no minimum is published. The Class of 2026 averaged 696.
Can I apply to both ISB and IIM Calcutta? Yes. Application windows and requirements differ, so check each school's page. Our ISB PGP admissions guide covers ISB's rounds and documents.
Is nine years too many for ISB PGP? It is not a bar, but it is unusual. Applicants with eight or more years appear in every class, yet the average is about four. You will need to explain why PGP and not PGPMAX.
What this means for Indian applicants
If you have five to nine years of experience and want a senior peer group, shortlist MBAEx alongside ISB, not instead of it. If you have 10 or more years, look at PGPMAX first. If you are under seven, ISB PGP is a more natural fit. Start with the ISB PGP admissions guide, then run your profile through a profile evaluation before you pay two application fees.
