HEC costs more than twice what ISB does, and the extra buys a visa track

ISB vs HEC Paris One Year MBA: The Financial Decision for Indian Applicants

If you are 28, working at a Bengaluru product company on 38 lakh a year, holding a 720 GMAT, and wondering whether ISB or HEC Paris is the smarter use of a family's savings and a loan, the honest answer starts with a number most comparison pages bury. HEC Paris costs more than twice what ISB does. The question is not which school is cheaper. It is whether the extra money buys something you will use.

This is a financial comparison of ISB vs HEC Paris for Indian applicants, not a prestige ranking. Read it with your own loan quote open.

What does each programme actually cost?

ISB first. The PGP fee for the 2026-27 cohort on the official ISB fees page is INR 38,67,160 for shared accommodation and INR 42,42,040 for a studio. Add travel, insurance, laptop and the usual leakage and our full ISB fee breakdown lands closer to 46 lakh for the year.

HEC Paris is quoted in euros. MBA&Beyond lists tuition at EUR 99,000 for the September 2025 intake and EUR 102,000 for January 2026. CrackVerbal's May 2026 guide puts total cost at about EUR 120,000 to 124,000 once living costs of EUR 18,000 to 22,000 are included. At an assumed rate of INR 100 per euro (check the live rate before you plan), that is roughly INR 1.2 crore.

So the gap is not small. On these numbers HEC Paris costs about 2.6 times ISB all in, or roughly INR 75 lakh more. Neither school publishes an Indian-specific scholarship quota, and CrackVerbal notes HEC scholarships tend to be allocated in early rounds, so apply early if you want any discount.

What do the graduates earn?

ISB's Class of 2026 reported an average package of INR 37.29 lakh and a median of INR 31 lakh, across 808 graduates and 1,117 offers from 364 recruiters, with a top offer of INR 1.56 crore, as covered by Business Today. We unpack the spread in our ISB average package analysis.

HEC Paris reports an average total package of about USD 123,000 for the Class of 2025 on CrackVerbal, and MBA&Beyond shows USD 124,685 for a table labelled Class of 2025. Both pages mix class years in other sections, so treat the HEC salary as a range of roughly USD 110,000 to 125,000 until you read the school's own employment report. At current exchange rates that is on the order of INR 1 crore.

Here is the part that matters. HEC's headline salary is roughly 2.5 to 3 times ISB's average, which sounds like it justifies the cost. It does not do so automatically, because the salary is paid in euros or dollars, lands in a different tax system, and is earned in a market where an Indian national needs a work permit to earn it.

If you are an IT services or product engineer aiming to stay in India

Pick ISB. Roughly 46 lakh against a median of 31 lakh with 364 recruiters hiring for India roles is a payback you can model on one spreadsheet. HEC Paris adds INR 75 lakh of cost for a network that is 95 percent international (per CrackVerbal), which is a feature if you plan to leave India and a weakness if you do not.

A Rs 35 lakh loan is manageable at ISB's median. A Rs 1 crore loan for HEC, serviced from an India salary, is a different animal. If India is the plan, HEC is very hard to justify on cost alone.

If you are a consultant or banker who wants Europe

This is the profile for whom the comparison is genuinely close. HEC Paris is a 16-month programme in the Paris region with a class of 268, a 690 average GMAT and about six years of average work experience (CrackVerbal). Central and South Asia is 23 percent of the class, the largest regional bloc, so you will not be the only Indian in the room.

The real prize is the French post-study route. Meridiane's summary describes a 12-month, non-renewable job-search permit (the APS) for holders of a master's-level or MBA qualification, followed by the Passeport Talent if you land a job paying at least 1.5 times the monthly minimum wage. Its 2026 figure is roughly EUR 2,700 gross a month. Verify the current threshold and rules on official French government pages before you rely on them, because they change.

ISB has no equivalent. A PGP graduate who wants to work abroad must still win a sponsorship on their own, as we explain in ISB for international applicants.

If you are a reapplicant or a family-business candidate

ISB's one-year format at 38 to 42 lakh with a deferred-entry option is the lower-regret choice. A family business that wants you back in 12 months is not a candidate for a 16-month, INR 1.2 crore detour. If you have been rejected once at ISB, read the ISB PGP admissions guide before you assume a European school is an easier door. HEC's 690 average GMAT is not low.

How to run the numbers yourself

Take three figures. Total cost in rupees, expected first-year post-tax salary in rupees, and the probability you actually land the offer you are modelling. For ISB, use the INR 31 lakh median, not the INR 37.29 lakh average. For HEC, use the low end of the range and then subtract a realistic haircut for visa risk. A programme that wins on average salary but loses on median-after-risk is not the better bet.

An honest limit: we have not seen HEC Paris's own employment report for the latest class, and the third-party pages we cite disagree on class year. Pull the school's PDF before you commit.

Common questions

Is HEC Paris worth it for an Indian applicant? Only if working in Europe is the goal. For an India career the extra INR 75 lakh rarely pays back inside seven years on the numbers above.

Is ISB cheaper than HEC Paris? Yes, by roughly INR 75 lakh all in at an assumed INR 100 per euro. The gap moves with the exchange rate.

Can I get an education loan for HEC Paris? Indian lenders generally finance European programmes, but collateral rules and caps differ by bank. Get written quotes from at least two lenders before you accept an offer.

Does an HEC MBA guarantee a job in France? No. The APS gives you 12 months to find work that meets the salary threshold. It is a window, not an offer.

What this means for Indian applicants

If your plan is India, take ISB and use the savings to reduce the loan. If your plan is Europe, HEC Paris is a real option, but only if you can fund the full cost without leaning on the first salary to bail you out. Start with a profile evaluation so you know which of the two you can realistically win, then compare programmes on our MBA and MIM page.
