If you are a CA who finished articleship in 2023, or an Infosys engineer whose first eight months were a training bench, you have probably counted your ISB PGP work experience three different ways and gotten three different answers. That worry is reasonable. ISB asks for a minimum of 24 months of full-time work, and the admissions office verifies every month against documents. This post gives you a four-step audit to run before you choose a round, and tells you which ISB programme your real number points to.
The numbers that actually bind you
Start with what ISB publishes, not what forums repeat. The PGP eligibility page states the programme is designed for candidates with a minimum of 24 months of full-time work experience, and that the admissions office looks for this before enrolment. There is no published upper limit.
The class itself is wider than the "two to seven years" rule of thumb suggests. ISB's PGP Class of 2027 has 839 students, an average age of 26, and work experience running from two to 18 years. The Class of 2026 looked similar, with experience ranging from two to seventeen years. So the "rule" is really a description of where the middle of the class sits, not a gate. The gates are 24 months at the bottom and programme fit at the top.
Around the PGP, ISB now runs three programmes with hard work experience lines:

ISB has also said that the older deferred entry routes are discontinued in favour of PGP YL. If you were planning around a deferred PGP seat, that door has closed.
Step 1: Strip out every month that is not full-time
The ISB PGP FAQ is blunt on three points that catch Indian applicants:
- Part-time work does not count. Freelance projects alongside a degree, weekend consulting, or a part-time job during an MBA-equivalent course are off the ledger.
- CA articleship does not count. ISB says articleship adds value to your exposure but is not considered work experience for admission. A CA who qualified in late 2024 and joined a Big Four firm in January 2025 is counting from January 2025, not from the start of articleship.
- Only one activity is full-time at a time. If you did an executive diploma while employed, the job is your full-time activity; the diploma does not add months.
Internships, training stipends during a final-year degree, and paid research assistantships while enrolled usually fail the same test. Count from your first full-time offer letter date.
Step 2: Check the months that need paperwork, not just time
Some experience counts but needs more proof than a salary slip.
Family business. ISB will consider full-time work in a family-owned business if you can support it with documents, and says the quality and relevance of the work are critical. The catch most heirs miss: recommendations from your father, friends or family are not accepted. You need a client, vendor or banker who dealt with you professionally.
Armed Forces. ISB counts Army service and reads it in the context of the responsibilities you handled. An officer with six years and a company command is not competing on years; the committee is reading scope.
Founders. Your own startup counts if it was your full-time activity. Expect to show registration, revenue or funding documents, and have a co-founder or investor ready as a recommender.
ISB verifies applications within 20 days of submission and gives you three days to fix a mismatch. A month you cannot document is a month you should not claim.
Step 3: Map your clean number to the right programme
Once you have a documented, full-time figure, the routing is simple:
- Under 24 months: PGP YL is built for you. Fighting the PGP median with 14 months usually fails on fit, not merit.
- 24 to about 60 months: The PGP is your programme, and this is where most of the class sits.
- 5 to 9 years: Both the PGP and PGP PRO are open. The question is whether you need campus recruiting and a full career switch (PGP) or a step up while keeping your job (PGP PRO).
- 10 years and above: The PGP still admits people at 17 and 18 years, but you will need a sharp answer to "why not PGPMAX or PGP PRO." Our PGP PRO cohort review covers that trade-off in detail.
Step 4: Replace the year count with a density count
This is where the "sweet spot" myth misleads people. Two applicants with four years each can read completely differently. The PGP evaluation, per ISB, looks at professional experience alongside academics, scores, essays and recommendations, and uses a holistic profile score. In our work with Indian applicants over 13 years, what moves that score is not months but evidence: a promotion, a team you ran, a number you owned, a client you kept.
A practical test: write one line for each year of your career that starts with a verb and ends with a number. If year three and year four read the same, the committee will see flat experience, and adding a fifth year will not fix it.
If you are an IT services engineer with 26 to 30 months
You clear the gate, but only just, and your first six months may have been training. Apply in a round where your documented months comfortably exceed 24 by enrolment, and use your essays to show one piece of client-facing ownership. If your experience is thin, PGP YL may now be the stronger application.
If you are a CA or doctor who started late
Your clock starts after articleship or after your internship year, which often means you are 25 or 26 with barely two years of counted work. That is fine; it matches the class median age. Lead with the depth of your audit or clinical responsibility, not the calendar.
What this means for Indian applicants
Run the four steps before you touch an essay.
