If you are a Pune-based software engineer who has spent three weeks watching YouTube videos of mock ISB group discussions, rehearsing how to "enter early" and "summarise at the end", you may be preparing for a round that does not exist. ISB's own FAQ page says it plainly: "There is no group discussion." This post explains what the ISB team based discussion search is really about, what the adcom scores instead, and where your teamwork evidence actually gets tested.
Is there an ISB team based discussion round?
For the flagship PGP, no. ISB states that all shortlisted applicants are interviewed, and the FAQ separately says there is no group discussion. The interview is a one-on-one conversation with a panel drawn from the alumni community, not a room of eight strangers arguing about a case.
The confusion is understandable. IIM admissions have long used a group exercise or written ability test, and Wharton runs a Team Based Discussion as part of its interview day. Applicants who apply to all three tend to merge the formats in their heads, and a handful of coaching sites keep old group discussion material alive for ISB. The 2020 and 2022 admissions director interviews on Clear Admit describe only individual interviews, with no group exercise mentioned at all.
One caveat worth stating: ISB can change its process, and we have not seen the 2027 intake documentation promise otherwise. Check the live admissions page before you finalise your plan. If a team round is ever reintroduced, it would be announced there first, not in a forum thread.
What does the ISB adcom actually score?
Dibyendu Bose, ISB's admissions director, has listed the inputs in two separate Clear Admit interviews: academic qualifications, GMAT or GRE score, work experience, extracurriculars, essays, recommendations and diversity. For essays specifically, he says readers look for "clarity of thought, evidence of maturity and instances of leadership and interpersonal skills".
Read that last phrase again. Interpersonal skills and leadership are exactly what a team discussion would be designed to observe. ISB has chosen to read them from your written evidence instead. Your teamwork is scored on paper, and then re-tested verbally.
The interview adds a second rating. According to the 2022 interview, the alumni interview produces a score that is combined with the pre-interview application score to form the final rating. Interviews are blind and conducted by over 500 alumni across Indian cities. The adcom, made up of alumni and faculty, then approves or rejects the recommendations.
The numbers explain why each stage matters. In 2020, Bose said ISB interviews roughly 2,500 applicants for a cohort of about 900, with a selection ratio between one in six and one in seven applicants. Being interviewed is therefore not a near-admit. Roughly one in three interviewees gets a seat.
If you are an IT services engineer worried about "standing out"
Your fear is that without a group round you have no stage to show initiative. The reverse is true: you have a quieter, more demanding stage. Alumni interviewers have seen hundreds of "led a team of eight on a migration project" stories. What separates yours is a specific decision you made when the team was stuck, with a number attached.
Prepare two stories, not ten. One where you changed how a group worked (a process, a handover, a conflict), and one where you were wrong and corrected course. Our post on the ISB teamwork essay shows how to structure the first one so it survives follow-up questions.
If you are a non-engineer or a career changer
Your risk is different. A group discussion would have forced you to prove quantitative fluency live. Without one, the adcom relies on your GMAT or GRE score and your essays to settle that question before you reach the interview. Do not expect the interview to rescue a weak quantitative signal. Use your essays to show where numbers shaped a decision you made, even if your title was not analytical.
A practical test helps here. Take your strongest teamwork story and ask a friend to challenge it three times: why did you decide that, what did the others think, and what would you change now. If your answers get vaguer with each question, the story belongs in a notebook, not in your essay. The adcom reads the essay first, and the interviewer reads it again before you sit down, so any gap shows up twice.
What the process ignores
Three things that coaching material often rewards matter little at ISB.
Airtime. There is no group in which to count it. Interviewers hear one voice for 20 to 30 minutes, and a panel can tell within the first few answers whether you listen or perform.
Rehearsed frameworks. Interviews at ISB are described by the admissions director as resume-based, meant to understand aspirations, motivations and fit. A memorised "situation, task, action, result" script collapses the moment a panelist asks why you chose that project over the one next to it.
Group-discussion polish. Opening lines, summarising and moderating are skills built for a different format. They do not appear on any ISB scoring criterion we have seen published.
What this means for Indian applicants
Spend your preparation time where the points are. Start with the essays, because that is where interpersonal evidence is first scored, and the interview will be built from them. Read our ISB PGP admissions guide for the full sequence of stages, then use our breakdown of the ISB interview format to plan your 20 to 30 minutes.
Then pressure-test your stories out loud with someone who will interrupt you. A profile evaluation can show you which of your experiences carry the most weight before you commit them to the essay.
Common questions
Does ISB have a group discussion for PGP admission? No. The ISB PGP FAQ says there is no group discussion. Shortlisted applicants go through an individual interview with alumni panelists. Older articles that describe group exercises are either about other schools or about earlier years.
Is the ISB interview the same as Wharton's team based discussion? No. Wharton's TBD is a group exercise run alongside a short interview. ISB's interview is a conversation based on your resume and essays. Prepare for them separately if you are applying to both.
What does ISB look for in teamwork and leadership? The admissions director points to clarity of thought, maturity, leadership and interpersonal skills in essays. In the interview, the alumni panel tests whether the stories hold up under follow-up questions about your specific role and decisions.
How many applicants are interviewed? In 2020, the admissions director said about 2,500 applicants were interviewed for a cohort of around 900. That figure is from 2020, so treat it as a ratio, not a current count.
