If you are a final-year engineering student at a tier-1 Indian college reading about ISB at 2 a.m., you have probably already dismissed PGP YL because you think it is the "junior" programme. That instinct is wrong. PGP YL is ISB's 20-month residential MBA for graduates with zero to twenty-four months of work experience, and at roughly 26 lakh in fees, it is the cheapest route to an ISB degree available today.
What ISB PGP YL actually is (and what it replaced)
ISB used to run two deferred-entry pathways into the flagship PGP: the Young Leaders Programme (YLP) and the Early Entry Option (EEO). Both have been discontinued. PGP YL replaced them as a standalone, full-time programme with its own curriculum, its own cohort, and its own placement cycle. The degree is identical to the PGP on paper. The experience is not. PGP YL runs twenty months instead of twelve, includes a mandatory summer internship, and front-loads foundational coursework that the flagship PGP assumes you already know from five-plus years in the workforce.
The curriculum includes AI, blockchain, and data science modules using R and Python across seven sessions. For a 22-year-old with a computer science degree, that structure is more useful than the PGP's compressed twelve-month sprint designed for mid-career professionals.
If you are an engineering graduate from IIT, NIT, or BITS with no work experience
You are the core target. ISB designed PGP YL for Indian graduates who would otherwise wait three to four years before applying to the flagship PGP. The eligibility window is strict: a completed bachelor's degree and a maximum of twenty-four months of full-time work experience as of 15 June of the joining year. If you have twenty-five months, you are ineligible.
The test requirement is GMAT, GRE (test-centre only), or CAT. ISB does not publish a minimum cutoff, but competitive profiles typically show a GMAT of 665 or higher, a GRE of 325-plus, or a CAT percentile between 98 and 99. Only CAT 2025 scores were accepted for the 2026-28 batch.
The fee for the 2026-28 cohort is 25,60,000 rupees plus taxes for shared accommodation paid in a single instalment, per ISB's fee page. Compare that to the flagship PGP's 42-plus lakh, and the arithmetic is clear. For a deeper breakdown, read our ISB PGP YL fees analysis.
If you are a commerce or liberal arts graduate considering early MBA options
PGP YL accepts all academic backgrounds, not just engineers. If you hold a BCom, BA Economics, or BBA from a strong Indian university and have a competitive GMAT or CAT score, you are eligible. The programme's foundational term covers quantitative methods and analytics, which means you do not need an engineering degree to keep up. What ISB looks for in non-engineering applicants is evidence of leadership through academic initiatives, community work, or entrepreneurial projects. A CA articleship or a startup internship counts as meaningfully as a TCS posting.
The twenty-month format is particularly relevant for commerce graduates. The flagship PGP's one-year sprint assumes quantitative fluency from day one. PGP YL gives you a full extra term to build that base before the advanced coursework begins.
The summer internship data that matters
The inaugural PGP YL cohort (2025-27) secured over 175 internship offers from 38 recruiters in November 2025. The average monthly stipend was 1.6 lakh rupees; the highest was 3.65 lakh rupees per month. Consulting absorbed 47 percent of all offers. McKinsey, Bain, and BCG collectively extended 19 offers. Finance accounted for 19 percent, FMCG 11 percent, and technology 10 percent.
These are summer internship numbers, not final placements. The first PGP YL cohort graduates in early 2027, so final placement data does not exist yet. But the internship breakdown tells you who is recruiting from this cohort: the same firms that recruit from the flagship PGP. That signal matters more than any ranking proxy.
When PGP YL does not make sense
If you have more than two years of work experience or are about to cross that threshold by June 2027, PGP YL is not an option. Apply to the flagship PGP instead.
If you are a working professional with five-plus years considering ISB, you should be looking at PGPMAX or PGP PRO. We have covered the EMBA versus PGP decision separately.
PGP YL also does not make sense if your goal is an international career outside India. ISB's placement strength is overwhelmingly India-track. If you want to work in London, Singapore, or the US after your MBA, a one-year programme at INSEAD, LBS, or a US M7 will serve you better. PGP YL's value proposition is strongest for Indian graduates who want consulting, finance, or general management roles in India and want to start two to three years earlier than the typical ISB PGP applicant.
What this means for Indian applicants
PGP YL solves a specific problem: the Indian graduate who is too qualified for campus placements at age 22 but too junior for the flagship PGP's five-year experience expectation. The programme fills that gap at a fee that is 16 lakh cheaper than the flagship, with MBB and Big Four firms already recruiting from the cohort.
The application has two rounds. For the 2026-28 batch, Round 1 closed in December 2025 and Round 2 closed in February 2026. If you are targeting the 2027-29 cycle, expect similar windows. Start your GMAT or GRE preparation now; ISB does not accept online or at-home test formats.
Forty to fifty percent of PGP YL students receive scholarships, which can bring the effective cost below 20 lakh. For a programme that places into McKinsey and Bain at stipends above 1.5 lakh per month during the internship itself, that is an ROI most IIM IPM or NMIMS early-career programmes cannot match.
If you are unsure whether your profile fits PGP YL or the flagship PGP, a profile evaluation will clarify which programme maximises your odds. The eligibility line is sharp, and applying to the wrong programme wastes a year.
Common questions Indian applicants are asking
Is PGP YL the same degree as PGP? Yes. Both confer the same ISB Post Graduate Programme in Management degree. The transcript and diploma do not distinguish between the two. The difference is in duration (20 months versus 12), cohort composition (early career versus mid-career), and curriculum sequencing. Recruiters at MBB, Big Four, and major corporates treat both cohorts as ISB graduates. Read the full ISB PGP admissions guide for a side-by-side view.
Can I apply with just a CAT score, without GMAT? Yes. ISB accepts CAT, GMAT, and GRE for PGP YL. For the 2026-28 batch, only CAT 2025 scores were valid. There is no stated preference for one test over another, but competitive CAT applicants typically need a 98-99 percentile. If you already have a strong CAT score, you do not need to take GMAT separately.
What if I have exactly 24 months of experience? ISB calculates work experience as of 15 June of the joining year. If you have 24 months or fewer on that date, you are eligible. If you have 25 months, you are not. There is no flexibility. Plan your application timeline around this hard cutoff, and verify with ISB's admissions office if your start date is ambiguous.
How does PGP YL compare to IIM's five-year integrated programmes? IIM Indore's IPM and IIM Rohtak's IPM are five-year integrated programmes that start after Class 12. PGP YL is a post-graduation programme that starts after your bachelor's degree. They target different life stages. If you are already in your final year of college or have graduated, PGP YL is the relevant comparison, not IPM. The ISB brand, FT Global MBA ranking (27th worldwide in 2025), and consulting placement rates give PGP YL an edge over most integrated programmes for India-track careers.
Is the 26-lakh fee the total cost? The 25.6 lakh figure covers tuition, accommodation, and course material. Add 18 percent GST, personal expenses, laptop, and travel, and budget closer to 32-34 lakh all-in. For a detailed cost breakdown, read our ISB fees analysis.
