The optional essay is a trap for the guilty and a runway for the misunderstood

ISB Optional Essay: When to Use It and When Silence Is the Smarter Play

If you have finished Essay 1 and Essay 2, the word count is sitting at 400 and 400, and a third box labelled optional is staring at you at 1 a.m., the question is not whether you can fill 250 words. You can. The question is whether filling them helps or hurts. This post is for the Indian applicant, often an engineer or consultant with four to six years of experience, deciding whether to use the ISB optional essay for the 2027 intake (PGP Class of 2028) or leave it blank.

What exactly is the ISB optional essay asking in 2027?

Per the Clear Admit analysis of the 2026-27 ISB prompts, the optional essay is capped at 250 words and asks you to share intellectual pursuits, unique perspectives, or experiences that shaped your worldview, your growth through them, and how they could contribute to ISB's learning community. The GMAT Club breakdown of the latest cycle lists the same prompt and the same limit.

Read that carefully, because it is not the optional essay most MBA applicants imagine. It is not an "anything else the committee should know" box. There is no invitation to explain a low GPA, a career gap, or a short stint at a previous employer. The prompt asks for three things: a pursuit or perspective, what it changed in you, and what it adds to a classroom. An essay that only explains a weakness answers a question ISB did not print.

Should you write it? The short answer

Write it if you have a genuinely new angle that Essays 1 and 2 could not hold. Skip it if your only motive is to avoid leaving a box empty.

ISB does not publish a rule saying applicants who skip the essay are scored lower, and we have seen no official statement claiming otherwise. The ISB admissions page describes the programme's selection around leadership potential and academic and professional achievement. Some third-party guides, such as the Class of 2027 essay guide on GMAT Club, strongly encourage everyone to attempt it. That advice comes from coaching teams, not from ISB, and it is worth weighing with that in mind. Our position is narrower: a sharp optional essay can help, a redundant one wastes the reader's attention, and a weak one is worse than silence.

The test: does it pass the three-question filter?

Before drafting, answer three questions in one sentence each.

First, what is the pursuit or perspective? If your answer is "I am hardworking" or "I value teamwork", stop. Those live in Essay 1. A pursuit has a noun: a village-level weather-data project, a classical music practice you kept for nine years, a debating circuit, a community library you ran from your housing society.

Second, what did it change in how you think? "It taught me humility" is a greeting-card line. "It made me distrust averages after I saw one district's rainfall hide three very different farms" is a change in thinking.

Third, what specifically will you bring to your cohort on the Hyderabad or Mohali campus? Name the thing: a peer-teaching session, a club, a case-discussion angle. "I will actively contribute to the community" scores nothing.

If you cannot answer all three in under 60 words, silence is the smarter play. The same discipline applies to the broader essays; our ISB essays decoded post walks through how the three prompts divide the work.

If you are an IT services engineer with a standard profile

The composite scenario: a 27-year-old at a large services firm, five years in, a solid GMAT, and an Essay 1 about leading a delivery team. Your resume already carries the professional story, so the optional essay is where the rest of you can enter. The mistake here is to write a second work story about a different project. That is padding.

The better use is a non-work pursuit with depth. Suppose you have spent four years running weekend coding sessions for students at a government school. That is a perspective on access to learning, a growth arc, and a clear contribution: you could start a peer-mentoring initiative on campus. If you have no such thread, do not invent one. Reading our note on how ISB adcom reads a resume in 2026 can help you see what the file already shows without the optional essay.

If you are a non-engineer or career switcher

The composite scenario: a 29-year-old with a humanities or commerce background moving from journalism, design, or the civil-services preparation circuit into business. Here the optional essay has a real job. The committee will wonder whether you can handle quantitative rigour and what you add that an engineer cohort cannot.

A strong 250 words can show a pursuit that answers both: you taught yourself statistics to fact-check a story, or you built a pricing model for a small business you advised. It frames you as someone whose different vantage point improves a discussion, which is precisely what the prompt asks. We cover this profile in more depth in ISB for the non-engineer applicant. For this group, leaving the box blank is usually a missed chance.

If you want to use it to explain a weak spot

The composite scenario: a 26-year-old with a 6.8 CGPA, or a one-year gap after a startup closed. The instinct is to use the optional essay as a confession booth.

Be careful. The prompt is about growth through pursuits, so a pure explanation does not fit it, and it can read as defensive. If the weak spot is real and material, a better route is to build the recovery into the pursuit: the startup that closed becomes the experience that changed your view of risk and what you learned about running a team on zero budget, framed as a contribution. If it is minor, let the rest of the application speak. A one-sentence factual note elsewhere in the application, where the form allows, is cleaner than 250 words of apology.

Mistakes that turn the optional essay into a liability

Four patterns come up repeatedly. The first is recycling the Essay 1 story with different verbs. The second is listing achievements as a bullet paragraph, which turns 250 words into a second resume. The third is the contribution line that could apply to any school. The fourth is polish without substance: a beautifully written essay about an interest you have not actually pursued for long. Indian applicants sometimes assume an unusual hobby helps. It helps only if the depth is real and you can defend it in an interview.

Questions applicants are asking about the ISB optional essay

Is the ISB optional essay actually optional? Formally yes. The prompt and the 250-word limit are listed as optional by Clear Admit and GMAT Club, and ISB has not, to our knowledge, published a penalty for skipping. In practice, treat it as a decision about whether you have something worth adding.

Can I use the optional essay to explain a low GMAT or GPA? The prompt does not ask for this. If you need to address a weak metric, do it through evidence in the rest of the application, and use this essay for growth and contribution.

Should I reuse a story from Essay 1 or Essay 2? No. A fresh pursuit is the point. If your best material is already used, skip it. Our ISB essay analysis for 2026 makes the same call on redundancy.

How long should it be? Use the space the idea needs, up to 250 words. A tight 180 to 220 words usually reads better than 250 padded words.

What this means for Indian applicants

Decide on the optional essay last, after Essays 1 and 2 are done, and decide with the three-question filter. If you have a real pursuit, a real change in your thinking, and a concrete campus contribution, write it. If you are reaching, stay silent and spend the time tightening Essay 1, for which our post on the ISB teamwork prompt decoded may help. For the full picture of eligibility, rounds, and what the committee weighs, see the ISB PGP admissions guide. If you are unsure whether your pursuit is strong enough, our profile evaluation is built to tell you before you write, and the MBA and MiM service covers the full essay set.
