If you were dinged in Round 1 last cycle and have spent the weeks since telling yourself it was the GMAT, this is the post to read before you open the application portal again. A workable ISB reapplicant strategy starts with the calendar, because the calendar has already made one decision for you. Round 1 for the PGP Class of 2028 closed on 20 September 2026. As of today, 1 October, the realistic first slot is Round 2, which closes on 6 December. That is 66 days.
The calendar a reapplicant is actually working with
The official ISB deadlines page sets three rounds for the Class of 2028. Round 1 closed 20 September, with decisions at the end of December 2026. Round 2 closes 6 December, with interviews from the fourth week of December to the first week of February and decisions in mid-February 2027. Round 3 closes 17 January 2027, with decisions in mid-March. ISB also states that applications submitted after one deadline automatically roll into the next round, and that nothing is accepted after 17 January.
The same page says reapplicants "typically represent 20-25%" of the applicant pool, get a reduced fee, and may submit a dedicated essay on their growth since the last attempt. So your situation is routine for the admissions committee. What is not routine is a second file that reads like the first.
Round 2, Round 3, or skip a year: how the options compare
| Round 2 (6 Dec 2026) | Round 3 (17 Jan 2027) | Next cycle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days from today | 66 | 108 | Roughly a year |
| Decision | Mid-February 2027 | Mid-March 2027 | Late 2027 onward |
| Time to show new evidence | About two months | About three and a half months | A full year |
| Main risk | Rushed file | Least room to iterate before the cutoff | Losing momentum, GMAT validity |
| Best for | Reapplicants whose fix is the story or recommender | Reapplicants waiting on a promotion or a new score | Reapplicants whose profile gap is structural |
Round 2 suits you when the problem was the written file, not the profile. Essays and recommenders can be rebuilt in nine weeks. A promotion, a larger mandate or a leadership role cannot be conjured on that schedule, and pretending otherwise in the reapplicant essay will show.
Round 3 is the pressure valve for a pending event: an appraisal cycle that closes in December, a retaken GMAT with a result due in early January. Use it for a reason you can name, not because the draft is late.
Diagnose before you rebuild: the one call to make first
If you were interviewed and rejected, ISBeacon advises requesting feedback from ISB before anything else, because it tells you whether the weakness was test score, essay quality or interview performance. If you never reached the interview, the diagnosis is yours to make with an honest external reader. Either way, do this in week one, not week six.
Do not default to the GMAT. For context, the ISB Class of 2026 averaged a 720 GMAT across 826 students, with about 4.02 years of work experience. A reapplicant already inside that range gains little from a retake and loses weeks.
If you were dinged after the interview
You cleared the written bar, so over-correction is the real risk. Keep the structure and evidence that earned the interview. Rework the thing that wobbled in the room: usually a post-MBA goal that did not survive follow-up questions, or a weak answer on why the one-year format fits you.
GoalISB's reapplicant Q&A describes a candidate who applied in the second round after a rejection and completed the second application in six to seven days. The changes that mattered there were not essay edits. They were a shift from trying to impress to a candid conversation, and blunt feedback. Run five or six mock interviews with someone who will tell you the answer was too long.
If you were dinged without an interview
A pre-interview ding usually means the file failed to separate you from a very large pool of similar engineers and IT services professionals. The fix is positioning, not volume. Replace a generic "engineer to consultant" goal with one specific enough to be wrong: a named function, a named sector, a reason the next role cannot be reached without the MBA.
Then change the recommender conversation. A lukewarm letter quietly sinks strong files, and re-briefing the same person with three specific stories, or choosing a different recommender, is the cheapest high-impact move available. Our guide to choosing an ISB recommender covers how.
A 66-day plan for a Round 2 reapplicant
Weeks 1 to 2: obtain feedback if you were interviewed, then write down in one paragraph why you think the file failed. Weeks 3 to 5: rebuild the goal and the two core essays around it, and brief the recommender. Weeks 6 to 7: draft the reapplicant essay last, once you know what is genuinely new. ISBeacon notes that completed projects, certifications, workplace initiatives and expanded responsibility all qualify as growth, so you do not need a promotion to have something real to say. Weeks 8 to 9: external read, interview preparation, submit before 6 December rather than on it.
What this means for Indian applicants
Most Indian reapplicants are mid-career engineers from IT services, consulting or core industries, and they tend to over-invest in test scores and under-invest in recommenders and goals. If that sounds like you, treat the GMAT as innocent until the feedback proves otherwise. Start with the ISB PGP admissions guide for the full structure, then read our fuller breakdown in ISB Reapplication in 2026. If you want an outside read on which signal failed, our profile evaluation is built for that triage.
Common questions
Can I reapply in Round 2 after a Round 1 reject? Yes, provided it is a new cycle. For Class of 2028, Round 1 has closed, so Round 2 on 6 December 2026 is the first window. ISB welcomes returning applicants and reapplicants make up roughly a fifth to a quarter of the pool.
Is the ISB reapplicant essay compulsory? The ISB page says reapplicants "may" submit a dedicated essay on professional growth. Treat it as expected. A reapplicant with no stated change is asking the committee to reach the same decision again.
Is Round 2 harder than Round 1? ISB does not publish round-wise admit rates, so any figure you see is a guess. Decide on readiness: a strong Round 2 file beats a rushed Round 1 file.
Should I wait for Round 3 to retake the GMAT? Only if the score was the binding constraint and the result will arrive before 17 January. Otherwise the wait buys you nothing.
