ISB Video Essay Preparation: What the Adcom Is Actually Scoring

If you are a 26-year-old engineer who has just read on a forum that ISB asks for a video essay, and you are now rehearsing a ninety-second monologue in front of your phone at midnight, pause before you spend another week on it. The honest position is that ISB's current published process does not list a video essay at all. This post is for Indian applicants who keep seeing the phrase "ISB video essay" and want to know what the adcom is actually scoring, and where that scoring happens today.

First, the fact check on the ISB video essay

ISB's official eligibility and requirements page for the PGP lists the application components as academic credentials, a GMAT or GRE score (the page says no minimum score is needed to apply), at least 24 months of full-time work experience, two mandatory essays of 400 words each, one optional essay of 250 words, an optional awards section and recommendations. For shortlisted candidates it describes a live interview of roughly 30 minutes, held on Zoom or in person, with an on-spot essay as part of the evaluation. It does not mention a video essay or a recorded response anywhere.

The 2026-27 essay prompts are written, not recorded: "What unique experiences have shaped who you are?" and "What intellectual experiences have influenced your approach to learning and have led you to pursue an MBA?" (ClearAdmit, 2026-27 analysis). A separate explainer on the PGP YL route likewise describes the interview as "a personal conversation, not a case interview" and lists no video step (GoalISB, PGP YL guide).

So where does the phrase come from? A widely shared guide on the topic was written about the ISB 2013 intake, when applicants were asked to complete "Life to me is..." on video within 90 seconds and 15 MB; the page was first published on 13 August 2013 and last modified on 12 September 2021 (MBA Admission Gurus). Old advice outlives the format it described. Treat any video requirement as something you confirm inside your own application portal for your cycle, because we found no confirmation of one in ISB's current published process.

What the 2013 video was scoring, and why it still matters

That legacy guide says assessors focused on three things: your communication skills and energy levels, your attitude, and your passion (MBA Admission Gurus). Read that list again. It has nothing to do with accent, and very little to do with vocabulary. It is a screen for presence: does this person sound like someone a batch of 900 would want in a study group at 11 p.m.

That is the real answer to the question behind the keyword. Fluency is the smallest thing being tested. What is tested is whether the person in your essays and the person in the room are the same. A typed essay can be edited for six weeks by you and three friends. A spoken answer cannot. So the adcom's check on authenticity has moved to the one place where you cannot polish: the live interview and the on-spot essay.

Where that signal is scored today: a four-part preparation plan

Use the video-essay instinct, but aim it at the interview. Four steps.

  1. Build one story bank, not twenty scripts. Pick five real episodes from your career: one leadership moment, one failure, one conflict, one thing you built, one thing you gave up. Every Essay 1 and Essay 2 claim should be traceable to one of them. Interviewers read your file before you walk in, and a story that appears in the essay and again in the room, with new detail, reads as true.
  2. Rehearse out loud, with a timer. A 30-minute conversation is mostly follow-ups. Practise answering "why ISB, why now" in 60 seconds and then in 20. If you can only say it one way, you have memorised it, not understood it.
  3. Practise writing under the clock. The on-spot essay is the second half of the same test. Write a 200-word answer to a surprise prompt in 15 minutes, once a week for a month, and read it back for specifics you actually used.
  4. Check your energy, not your polish. Record one practice answer on your phone, and judge only whether you sound like someone who wants to be there. The 2013 criteria, communication and energy, attitude, passion, are still a decent checklist.

For question banks and the format of the room, our post on the ISB interview format and the ISB interview question bank go deeper, and if you are specifically preparing for a recorded format at another school, see our note on the earlier ISB video essay 2026 post.

If you are an IT services engineer with strong GMAT and a thin story

This is the most common profile we see, and the risk is sounding like the last forty engineers the adcom met. A high score gets you a read; it does not get you the seat. Your move is specificity: a named project, a number, a decision that cost you something. One concrete 2025 escalation you owned is worth more than five generic claims about leadership.

If you are a non-engineer or family-business applicant

You do not have the default corporate script, which is an advantage in a room that reads for varied backgrounds. The risk runs the other way: undersold stories. Practise saying what you actually ran, how many people, how much money, what broke. Our guide to ISB for non-engineers covers the profile in more depth.

What this means for Indian applicants

Do not spend a week scripting a video that, on the published evidence, may not exist in your cycle. Spend it on the two things that certainly do: the 400-word essays and the live interview with its on-spot essay. Confirm the current steps on the ISB site and in your portal, then prepare for presence rather than performance. If you are unsure whether your stories are strong enough to carry a 30-minute conversation, a profile evaluation will tell you which experiences differentiate you, and our MBA and MIM guidance places ISB against your other options. For how every stage fits together, start with the ISB PGP admissions guide.

Common questions applicants are asking

Does ISB have a video essay in 2026? The official PGP requirements page we reviewed lists two written essays, an optional essay and a live interview with an on-spot essay, and no video component. Confirm in your own portal, because processes change by cycle.

What was the ISB video essay question? The best-documented prompt is from the 2013 intake: "Life to me is...", answered on video in 90 seconds and up to 15 MB (MBA Admission Gurus). That is a historical example, not a current prompt.

How do I prepare if I am asked to record a video? Treat it as a presence test. Lead with your answer in the first sentence, tell one specific story, and end on why ISB now. Do not read from a script, and record only after you have rehearsed the structure aloud.

Is the ISB interview in person or online? The official page says both Zoom and in-person formats are used, with a duration of about 30 minutes and an on-spot essay (ISB).

Who interviews you? ISB faculty, alumni and senior staff, per the same page.
