If your ISB shortlist email has not arrived yet, or arrived this morning, and you are wondering whether you have enough time, the short answer is yes, provided you stop counting from the invite. ISB's own eligibility page says shortlisted candidates get 3 to 7 days' notice before the interview. This ISB interview preparation timeline is built for an Indian PGP applicant with a submitted file, and it assumes most of the work happens before that notice lands.
What the notice window really looks like
Two sources set the clock. ISB's page lists the interview as Stage 4, about 30 minutes, with a panel that can include faculty, alumni and senior staff, and two on-the-spot essays that you complete at the interview. e-GMAT's guide says invitations start roughly 10 to 15 days after the round deadline, go out on a rolling basis, and give most candidates 4 to 6 days. That article dates from January 2022 with a February 2023 update, and e-GMAT sells interview coaching, so treat the specifics as indicative, not official.
The scale explains why preparation pays. In a 2022 Clear Admit Q&A, ISB's admissions director said it interviews about 2,500 applicants for a cohort of 900, with over 500 alumni involved, and that the interview rating is combined with the pre-interview score. That is a cohort of 900 drawn from 2,500 interviews, and cohort size is not the same as offers made, but it shows the interview is a real filter, not a formality. The 2022 figures are a scale marker, not a current statistic.
A worked timeline: Rohan, the IT services engineer
Rohan is an illustrative composite, not a real client. He is a Pune-based IT services engineer with five years of experience, a Round 1 file submitted in September, and a vague plan to move into product. The plan below is the one we would hand him. Days are counted back from the interview, with Day 0 as the interview itself.
Days 14 to 11: reread your own file
Do not open a question bank yet. Print your application, essays and resume and annotate every claim with three things: the number behind it, your exact role, and what went wrong. AdmitStreet's 2025 guide says to know your application thoroughly and be ready for follow-ups on any story you included. For Rohan, the line "led a migration that cut ticket volume" needs a baseline, a team size and one honest setback. This first stage costs about three evenings and prevents the most common failure, which is a claim you cannot defend after the second question.
Also settle your career goal in one sentence: short-term role, long-term role, and why ISB. If your essay says product management and your resume reads like delivery management, write down the bridge now. Our post on ISB interview red flags covers what happens when this bridge is missing.
Days 10 to 7: build the story bank
AdmitStreet suggests preparing 7 to 8 stories in the STAR format (situation, task, action, result), plus 2 to 3 questions for the panel. Rohan's bank should cover a team conflict, a failure, a decision made with incomplete data, a time he influenced without authority, and one story that is not about work at all. e-GMAT's four question categories (work experience, future goals, guesstimates and current affairs, and application follow-ups) are a useful checklist: if a category has no prepared material, that is your gap.
Write each story as five bullet points, never as a script. Scripts fail the first interruption. Then read the ISB interview questions for 2027 breakdown and map each recurring question to a story.
Days 6 to 4: mocks and the elevator pitch
e-GMAT recommends a 45 to 60 second answer to "tell us about yourself", built around your major, first job, reason for the MBA and ISB, and post-MBA goal. Record yourself on a phone. Rohan will hear the filler words once, and that is usually enough to fix them.
Run at least two timed mocks with someone who will interrupt: a senior colleague, an alumnus or a consultant. The aim is not polish. It is to practise being asked "why" three times in a row without getting defensive.
Days 3 to 2: the two on-the-spot essays
Because ISB says you complete two essays at the interview, spend one session on timed writing. Our guide to the ISB analytical writing task covers structure; the interview-prep point is simpler. Your essay voice should sound like your application voice, and your spoken answers should sound like both. Do one dry run on the actual device and connection you will use.
Day 1: logistics and sleep
Confirm format, since ISB lets you indicate a preference for virtual or in-person but the Admissions Team makes the final assignment. Test your camera, internet and backup hotspot. Lay out formal attire. Reread your annotated file once, then stop. e-GMAT notes that a few weak answers are unlikely to be a dealbreaker, so do not spend the last night hunting for a perfect answer.
If you are a reapplicant
You have a second file to reconcile: what the panel may remember, or what your prior-year essays said. Reread last year's application next to this year's and prepare a clear, calm account of what changed: role, scope, scores, clarity of goal. Spend your extra days on that explanation, not on new stories.
If you are a non-engineer or a career switcher
Your risk is the "why now, why this" question, not the technical one. Give the two days you would spend on guesstimates to the career-goal bridge instead, and use your story bank to show evidence of the new skill, not interest in it. Our piece on ISB for the non-engineer applicant goes deeper.
What this means for Indian applicants
Plan as though you have 14 days and expect to receive 3 to 7. If you submitted in Round 1 and the invite lands around the 10 to 15 day mark, the useful moment to start is now, while you wait. The sequence matters more than the hours: file first, stories second, mocks third, logistics last. The ISB PGP admissions guide sets out the full process the interview sits inside, and if you want a second pair of eyes on your file before the invite, our profile evaluation and interview preparation services are built for exactly that gap.
Common questions
How many days do I get to prepare after the ISB shortlist?
ISB's page says 3 to 7 days' notice before the interview. e-GMAT's older guide reports 4 to 6 days. Either way, it is short, which is why the file review should happen before the email arrives.
Is 14 days enough for the ISB interview?
For most applicants with a coherent file, yes. The work is mostly rereading, story selection and two or three mocks. It is not enough if you are building a career-goal narrative from scratch, so start that earlier.
Should I memorise answers for the ISB interview?
No. Memorised answers break on the first follow-up. Keep five bullet points per story and let the wording change each time you tell it.
What happens after the interview?
Per ISB's process, the Admissions Committee reviews applications after interview feedback, then decisions are emailed by round timeline. Some shortlisted applicants may also be invited to separate scholarship interviews.
