The QS list Indian MBA applicants opened this week hid a 31-place fall

QS Global MBA Rankings 2027: What the IIM Slip Means for Indian Applicants

If you are a Bengaluru product manager who opened the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027 on September 16 to check whether IIM Bangalore still beats the school you also got into abroad, you probably noticed the headline number and moved on. Look again. IIM Bangalore held India's top spot, but IIM Calcutta fell 31 places in a single year. That gap is the part worth reading, and this post is for the Indian applicant deciding between a home programme and a foreign one for Fall 2027.

What the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027 actually changed

QS released the list on September 16, 2026, ranking more than 340 full-time MBA programmes across over 40 countries, according to Collegedunia's coverage of the release. The full table sits on the QS TopUniversities site.

The top of the table stayed where Indian applicants expect it. The US M7 and the established European names, Stanford, Wharton, Harvard, MIT Sloan, INSEAD, London Business School, HEC Paris and IESE among them, still anchor the top ten. For an applicant funding this through a loan, the movement at the top matters far less than a quieter shift lower down: Indian representation widened while the flagship IIMs lost ground on the exact indicators that used to carry them.

Where the IIMs and ISB landed

Three IIMs held the global top 100, but each slid. IIM Bangalore remains India's highest-ranked programme at 64, followed by IIM Ahmedabad at 70 and IIM Calcutta at 95, per education-sector reporting on the 2027 slip. IIM Calcutta's drop from 64 in the previous edition to 95 is the sharpest of the three.

At the same time the list now carries 19 Indian MBA programmes, including five new entries, up from just five Indian schools in 2020, according to reporting on the wider Indian showing. ISB Hyderabad again features among the global names.

IIM Bangalore 64
IIM Ahmedabad 70
IIM Calcutta 95

Read the two numbers together. More Indian schools are visible than ever, yet fewer sit near the top. Depth is rising and the ceiling is drifting down. For a shortlist, that means the label "ranked by QS" now separates programmes far less than it did five years ago.

Why the weighting favours the schools you can afford

QS weights employability at 40 percent of the score, return on investment at 20 percent, entrepreneurship and alumni outcomes at 15 percent, thought leadership at 15 percent, and class and faculty diversity at 10 percent. Employability carries more weight here than in any other global MBA ranking.

That design quietly rewards Indian programmes. A one-year ISB PGP costs roughly 41 lakh rupees. A two-year Wharton MBA runs past 240,000 dollars in tuition and fees alone, well over 2 crore before living costs. When a ranking measures salary uplift against what you paid, a school with strong domestic hiring and a fraction of the fee scores well on ROI even if its brand is thinner abroad. So a high QS position for an IIM is telling you the maths works in India, not that the degree travels.

If you are an IT services engineer targeting a US M7

The ROI line is where over-indexing on rank hurts you most. A strong QS ROI score at an Indian school is built on rupee salaries and rupee fees. It says nothing about your odds of a US work visa or a role at a Bay Area firm. If your goal is a post-MBA job in the United States, the rank you should weigh is the school's international hiring share and its sponsorship record, not its headline number. A programme can rank well on ROI and still place almost no international graduates where you want to work.

If you are a reapplicant or a CA choosing Europe

For a chartered accountant or a second-time applicant looking at one-year European programmes, the 2027 table is more useful as a screen than a verdict. The compression near the top means the difference between a school ranked 40 and one ranked 70 is often noise on QS's own indicators. Use the list to build a longer list, then separate schools on class profile, recruiter mix for your function, and whether the alumni base actually hires in the city you want. The rank gets you to a shortlist of ten. Your profile fit decides the final five.

What this means for Indian applicants

Treat the QS Global MBA Rankings 2027 as a sorting tool, not a decision. The honest read is that Indian schools are winning on cost-adjusted outcomes and losing a little altitude on reputation, while the US and European top ten held firm. That is a good situation for applicants who plan around it and a trap for anyone who chases the number alone.

Three filters we run with every candidate: post-MBA geography, does the school place graduates where you want to work; sponsorship record, what share of international students got work-visa support; and debt-to-salary ratio, is the expected first-year salary at least equal to the loan you will carry. If you want that mapped to your own profile before Round 2 closes, our MBA and MiM admissions consulting and profile evaluation services exist for exactly this decision.

Common questions applicants are asking

Is IIM Bangalore still the top Indian MBA in QS 2027? Yes. IIM Bangalore is India's highest-ranked programme at 64 globally, ahead of IIM Ahmedabad at 70 and IIM Calcutta at 95.

Why did IIM Calcutta drop so much? It fell from 64 to 95, a 31-place slide. QS weights employability and ROI heavily, and single-year movements on employer surveys and reported outcomes can move a school sharply. One year is a data point, not a trend.

Does a high QS rank mean I will get a US job? No. QS ROI is measured on salary against cost, which for Indian schools means rupee figures. It says nothing about work-visa odds. Check international placement and sponsorship data separately.

Should I pick an IIM over a US M7 because it ranks well on ROI? Only if your career is in India. If your target job is abroad, weigh visa route and international hiring, not the ROI score.

Rankings and figures verified against QS release coverage on September 21, 2026. Exact positions at the very top of the QS table are reported inconsistently across outlets; Indian school positions are corroborated across multiple sources. Next review: January 15, 2028.
