If you are a 29-year-old analytics manager in Bengaluru, three years into a services job, staring at a CAT score you took in 2024 and wondering whether a two-year full-time MBA is worth giving up a salary for, this week's news from Ahmedabad is aimed squarely at you. IIM Ahmedabad has opened admissions for the second batch of its blended MBA in Business Analytics and AI, and the Round 1 window closes on November 2.
What IIM Ahmedabad actually announced
The programme is formally called the BPGP: BA & AI, run by the Krishnamurthy Tandon School of AI at IIMA. It is a two-year degree programme spread across six terms. Teaching happens through live online sessions, with three immersive in-person modules on the Ahmedabad campus. Finishing year one earns a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Analytics and AI. Finishing both years earns the MBA and entry into the IIMA alumni network, per the official programme page.
The maiden batch was welcomed in April 2026 with 71 professionals. Average work experience was 7 years and 4 months. The largest sector was banking, financial services and insurance with 16 students, followed by IT products with 12, IT and ITeS with 11, and consulting with 6. Women made up 16 of the 71.
The dates and rules that matter
According to the Round 1 admissions page, the application window opened on September 5 and closes on November 2, 2026 at 11:59 pm IST. The IIMA Admission Test is scheduled for November 22. You can skip it if you hold a CAT, GMAT or GRE score dated January 1, 2021 or later. The application fee is Rs 2,000 with a CAT, GMAT or GRE score, and Rs 5,000 if you sit the IIMA test.
Eligibility has two parts. You need a bachelor's degree or equivalent (CA, CS, ICWA and CMA count) with at least 50 percent aggregate or equivalent CGPA. You also need either three years of full-time work experience after a three-year degree, or two years after a four-year degree, counted as of March 31, 2027. Admission webinars for this round run on October 18 and November 1.
For the previous cycle, Careers360 reported a total programme fee of Rs 20,00,000, excluding travel and stay for campus modules. Confirm the current figure on the fee section of the programme site, since the Round 1 page we reviewed did not state it.
What the numbers say about who this is built for
Read the first batch's profile carefully. A 7.3-year average means this is not an early-career programme in disguise. The eligibility floor of two to three years is a minimum, not a typical admit. If you have exactly three years of experience, expect to compete against people who have managed teams, owned P&Ls or shipped models into production.
The mix also tells you something. BFSI and IT dominate, which is where Indian analytics hiring has been concentrated for a decade. A candidate from healthcare, logistics or energy is a minority in the room, and that scarcity can work in your favour if your story ties domain depth to a specific analytics problem.
The accepted-test structure matters just as much. Because a five-year-old CAT score is valid, thousands of candidates who wrote CAT in 2021 to 2025 can apply without preparing for anything new. That lowers the cost of applying, which will raise application volume. Expect selectivity to come from the faculty interview and the profile review, not from the test.
What this means for Indian applicants
If you are an IT services engineer with a CAT score you never used. This is probably the most underrated option on your table. A valid score means no new exam, and the programme is built for people who will keep working. The risk is the statement of intent. "I want to move into AI" is what every applicant writes. A stronger case names a project you have already touched, such as a forecasting model, a data pipeline or an automation that saved real hours, and explains what formal training would let you do next.
If you are a CA or finance professional. The explicit CA, CS, ICWA and CMA eligibility line is deliberate. Your quantitative base is credible, and BFSI was the largest sector in the first cohort. Your gap is usually programming and machine learning exposure, so show evidence that you have started closing it before you apply.
If you are weighing this against a full-time MBA abroad or at ISB. Treat it as a different product. A two-year blended degree means two years of salary continuing, no relocation, and no international recruiting cycle. It does not offer the campus immersion, summer internship or cross-border network of a residential programme. If your goal is a career switch into consulting or investment banking, this is the wrong tool. If your goal is to move up inside analytics, product or data leadership while employed, it may be the right one. Our breakdown of IIM Ahmedabad's other programme costs and the PGPX instalment rules will help you compare total outlay.
If you are a reapplicant to flagship MBAs. A blended programme is not a consolation prize, but it is also not a shortcut around a weak profile. Admissions committees will read your motivation. If the honest reason is "I could not get into the full-time programme," your essays will show it.
The decision you should make before November 2
Two questions settle most cases. First, can your employer tolerate three on-campus modules and live evening sessions for two years? Get that conversation done before you pay a rupee in application fees. Second, are you applying because the content fits your next role, or because the IIM brand is attached? Interviewers at IIMA tend to probe the second question hard.
A practical timeline: attend the October 18 or November 1 webinar, shortlist the specific work projects you will cite, and decide whether to use an existing score or sit the November 22 test. If your last CAT, GMAT or GRE was dated before January 2021, you have only the IIMA test route. Our guide to GMAT versus GRE for Indian MBA applicants can help if you are thinking of a fresh score.
