If you are an Indian applicant who spent last weekend outlining a 900-word Kellogg draft, stop. Kellogg's Class of 2029 application, which opens through the summer for Round 1 in September, now allows one 550-word written essay split across two parts, and a five-question video essay instead of three. The single biggest writing habit that has hurt Indian Kellogg applicants for a decade, over-writing, just became fatal.
What actually changed in the Kellogg 2026-2027 application
The prior application asked for two essays of 450 words each plus short-answer goals questions. The new application, per Clear Admit's 2026-2027 analysis, collapses all of that into one 550-word essay in two clearly separated parts. The application text box permits up to 575 words, which is not an invitation to write 574.
Part I asks about the pivotal experiences and decisions that led you to apply now. Part II asks what you plan to contribute to classmates. The two prompts share one word budget, so an applicant who spends 400 words on Part I is left with 150 for Part II. That imbalance will be visible.
The video essay grew from three questions to five, each one 60 seconds, per Stacy Blackman Consulting's rundown of the new format. Kellogg's stated reason is to give admissions a more authentic, in-the-moment read of the candidate. The unstated reason is that video is much harder to game with a consultant.
Why the 550-word cap punishes Indian over-writers
Indian applicants, especially engineers from tier-1 undergrads, tend to write long. There is a cultural reason: technical explanations in Indian classrooms reward completeness, and CAT-style essay habits reward exhaustive argument. Neither habit works at 275 words per essay part.
A useful benchmark: 275 words is roughly the length of the paragraph you are reading now, plus one more like it. That is the entire container for "which pivotal experience shaped your ambitions". You do not have room for three examples. You have room for one, told with specificity.
The applicants who will struggle are the ones who write a career overview: "I started at Infosys in 2020, then moved to Deloitte, then led a product launch." The applicants who will do well are the ones who pick one 90-second moment (a client meeting, a difficult decision, a specific handoff) and use the remaining 185 words on what that moment revealed about their next 10 years. The five video essay questions matter more now
Under the old three-question format, the video essay was a small tie-breaker. Under the new five-question format, video accounts for roughly 5 minutes of first-person footage the admissions committee will actually watch, which is more airtime than the written essay itself.

One. Cut before you draft. Write your Part I answer in 60 words first, as a spoken sentence you would say to a friend across a table. Only after that skeleton works, expand to 275 words. Applicants who draft long and then cut lose the spoken quality that Kellogg's essay format now rewards.
Two. Rehearse video answers to actual Kellogg-style prompts, not generic ones. The five questions this year are likely to include at least one "tell us about a time you disagreed with a decision" prompt and one "how will you contribute to Kellogg" prompt. Record yourself at least 20 times per prompt. The 20th take is the one that sounds unrehearsed.
Three. If you are working with an admissions consultant, the value they add on Kellogg has fundamentally shifted. Editing a 900-word draft down to 550 is not the work.
