If you are a brand manager at a Mumbai FMCG firm, or an agency planner in Gurugram, and you picked Kellogg because everyone says it is the marketing school, pause before you pay an application fee. The Kellogg MBA from India is a strong choice, but the Class of 2025 numbers say the marketing reputation and the actual placement mix are two different things. This post separates them, so you can decide with the data rather than the brochure.
What the Kellogg employment report actually shows
Kellogg's Class of 2025 employment report records 88 percent of graduates with offers at three months and 86 percent with accepted offers. By six months, 90 percent had accepted roles. Median base salary was $175,000, median signing bonus $30,000, and Kellogg puts median total compensation at $205,000.
The industry split is where the contrarian reading starts. Consulting took 38 percent of the class at a $190,000 median base. Financial services took 21 percent at $175,000, technology 19 percent at $151,500, consumer packaged goods 9 percent at $128,000, and healthcare 6 percent at $142,500.
Read that again. The school known for marketing sent roughly four in ten graduates to consulting and fewer than one in ten to CPG. Top employers were Bain, J.P. Morgan Chase, Adobe, General Mills and DaVita. Kellogg's career outcomes page lists General Mills, Nike, Procter & Gamble and PepsiCo among its CPG recruiters, with a CPG signing bonus median of $32,500 and a base range of $116,500 to $190,000.
One honest caveat: the published pages we reviewed do not give a function-level marketing share or a marketing median salary. Marketing roles also sit inside technology and consulting, so the CPG figure understates how many graduates do marketing work. But it is the cleanest public proxy, and it is far smaller than the brand suggests.
The teamwork brand is real, and it is also the admissions filter
Kellogg's Class of 2027 has 534 students, a 733 legacy GMAT average (687 on GMAT Focus), 3.68 undergraduate GPA, 5.1 years of work experience and 37 percent international. Consulting was 32 percent of the incoming class and financial services 24 percent, tech and communications 15 percent.
So the entering class is already consulting and finance heavy. A brand marketer from India is not the median Kellogg student. That cuts both ways. You are scarcer, which helps a story, but you are also competing for CPG and brand seats against American classmates who need no sponsorship.
If you are a brand manager from an Indian FMCG firm
Your pre-MBA salary in rupees will look small next to the $128,000 CPG median, and that gap flatters the ROI. The harder question is the visa. CPG employers are among the more cautious about sponsoring, and the September 2025 H-1B proclamation with its $100,000 fee for new petitions, which we cover in our H-1B fee analysis, sharpens that. Ask in the admissions process which CPG recruiters actually hired international students last cycle, then check it with alumni. Do not assume the logo list means open doors.
The realistic CPG path for you is often summer internship, return offer, and a first role in Chicago, Minneapolis or Cincinnati. If a return offer does not come, the pivot is to consulting or tech marketing, which brings us to the next profile.
If you are an engineer in IT services or product who wants to pivot into marketing
This is the profile Kellogg markets itself to, and the numbers are mixed. Technology employed 19 percent of the class at a $151,500 median base, lower than consulting by $38,500. Adobe appearing among the top employers shows that product marketing at tech firms is a live route.
Your story has to prove marketing aptitude before you arrive: a product launch you owned, pricing you changed, a customer segment you opened. Without that, you will be one of many engineers saying "I want to move to product management", and Booth or Ross may serve you as well. Our comparison of Booth and Kellogg for the Indian applicant walks through that trade.
If you are a consultant who wants the consulting outcome with a lighter brand
Kellogg's consulting numbers are the quiet reason to apply. Thirty-eight percent in consulting at a $190,000 median base, with McKinsey, Bain, BCG, PwC Strategy& and Deloitte Consulting named among employers, is a record you can defend against a Booth or Wharton offer. Kellogg's pitch of collaboration over competition is also an admissions filter, so your essays need evidence that you make teams better, not only that you won.
What Kellogg will not fix for you
Kellogg does not fix a weak English-language story, a thin quantitative record, or a visa-blind career plan. It also does not guarantee a Chicago CPG job. The Class of 2025 had 6 percent of graduates placed internationally, which tells you that a return-to-India plan is the exception, not the default, from this school.
If you want to size your chances against the 37 percent international share, a profile evaluation before you draft essays is cheaper than a wasted round. Our wider MBA abroad guidance covers how Kellogg sits against the other US options, and the MBA and MIM pathways page helps if you are under three years of experience.
Common questions
Is Kellogg good for marketing if I am from India? Yes for the training and the network, with a caveat on placement volume. CPG was 9 percent of the Class of 2025, and Indian applicants need a visa-aware recruiter list. The brand is stronger than the headcount.
What GMAT score do I need for Kellogg? The Class of 2027 averaged 733 on the legacy scale and 687 on GMAT Focus. Averages are not cutoffs, but applicants well below them need another strong part of the file.
How much do Kellogg graduates earn? Median base was $175,000 for the Class of 2025, with a $30,000 signing bonus and $205,000 median total compensation. CPG medians are lower at $128,000 base, consulting higher at $190,000.
Kellogg or Booth for an Indian applicant? Kellogg is stronger on marketing and collaboration, Booth on analytical flexibility. Neither removes visa risk. The better fit depends on which recruiters you can realistically land.
What this means for Indian applicants
Apply to Kellogg for the people, the pedagogy and a consulting record of 38 percent, not for a marketing placement promise the data does not make. If CPG brand management is your only acceptable outcome, interview two recent international alumni and ask what happened to their offers before you commit. If you can live with consulting or tech marketing as a fallback, Kellogg is a better bet than its CPG share suggests. Start with an honest read of your own file through our MBA abroad service, then decide.
