If you spent 2023 dreaming of a 720 and now hold a 665 on the GMAT Focus Edition, you may be quietly deciding you fell short and booking a retake. Stop before you do. Your ISB GMAT Focus score should be judged on the Focus scale, not converted back to a number the test no longer produces. My position is simple: for most Indian ISB applicants, a Focus score between 655 and 685 is the finish line, and the months spent chasing 705 belong in your essays.
What an ISB GMAT Focus score of 720 really means
The most common mistake is treating the old 800-point scale as the yardstick. GMAC publishes a concordance table for exactly this reason, and it shows the two scales do not line up the way coaching folklore says. On that table a Focus 675 maps to a Classic 720, a Focus 655 maps to Classic 700, and a Focus 645 maps to Classic 690 (GMAC concordance table).
Percentiles drive the meaning. On the GMAC table, 655 sits near the 90th percentile and 675 near the 95th. Different tables carry slightly different percentile decimals, so treat the exact figures as approximate and the direction as reliable (MBA Crystal Ball). The point for you: an old "720 target" is a 675 Focus target, not a 645 and not a 700.
Where the ISB class actually sits
ISB reports its intake on the Focus scale. For the PGP Class of 2026, the average GMAT Focus score was 669, with a range from 555 to 765 across the Hyderabad and Mohali campuses (Crackverbal). Read that carefully. The average sits slightly below the old 720 equivalent of 675, which means roughly half the admitted class scored at or below what many applicants still treat as a stretch goal.

A scoring strategy in three bands
Think in bands, not single numbers. These are WePegasus working judgements drawn from 13 years of Indian admissions work, not ISB policy.
Below 645. The score is now something you have to explain. If your first attempt was below 620, a retake is the highest-return item on your list, because the fix is fully in your hands. Aim to clear 650 before touching anything else.
645 to 685. You are inside the admitted range and near the class average of 669. Here the GMAT stops being the story. Extra points in this band rarely change an adcom's read; a vague career goal or a generic essay will.
Above 685. A higher score removes an objection, it does not win the seat. If you are at 690 or higher and thinking of retaking for 710, that is effort in the wrong place.
If you are an IT services engineer with four to six years of experience
You are in the largest cluster in the Indian pool, and your file will sit beside hundreds that look like yours. A 700 Focus score does not rescue a generic story; it just makes you a well-tested version of the same one. If you are between 660 and 690, spend the next two months on a sharper career narrative and on choosing recommenders who can describe a decision you made, not a title you held. If you are a CA, CFA or non-engineer from a tier-2 college
Here the GMAT does more work, because it is one of the few standardised signals you fully control. Your Quant score matters most, since an admissions reader will use it to check the analytical strength your degree does not signal by itself. If you are at 640 to 655 with a strong work record, pushing to the 670s can be worth one retake. Beyond that, the return falls quickly.
Section balance matters more than the total
The Focus Edition reports Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights scores, each on a 60 to 90 scale, and the total runs from 205 to 805. For many Indian applicants the Quant number is strong and Verbal is the lagging one. If your Verbal is 10 or more points below your Quant, a targeted retake aimed at that one section is a smarter use of time than a general re-grind. A lopsided profile is easy to read as a specialist file; a very low Verbal is harder to explain for a programme taught entirely in English.
When a retake stops paying off
Use this test before you book a second attempt. Ask whether the retake fixes a weakness an adcom would notice, or only improves a number they already accept. A move from 615 to 660 changes your position. A move from 675 to 695 usually does not, and it eats weeks you cannot spend on the essays, resume and recommender briefings that separate admits from waitlists.
Reapplicants should be especially careful. A ding at 685 was almost never a score problem. Diagnose the file first, then decide whether the test belongs on the plan at all.
What this means for Indian applicants
Convert once, then forget the conversion. If you are at or above 655 on Focus, you are competitive and your job shifts to the rest of the application.
