If you are an engineer at a services firm in Bengaluru, you have probably seen the line that MBB hiring at ISB is "up this year" and wondered whether that changes your odds. It is a fair worry, because forty lakh and a year of your life are riding on the answer. The uncomfortable fact is that nobody outside ISB can verify that line. ISB consulting placements are reported as a sector, never as a McKinsey, BCG and Bain headcount. This post separates what is published from what is repeated.
What does ISB actually publish about consulting hiring?
The official Class of 2026 press release reports 1,117 offers to a batch of 808 students across the Hyderabad and Mohali campuses, an average CTC of Rs 37.29 lakh (about 11% higher than the previous cohort), and a highest offer of Rs 1.56 crore. It names Accenture as the top recruiter with more than 100 offers, and Mastercard and EY GDS with more than 40 each. It also says McKinsey, BCG and Bain extended offers.
What it does not give is a consulting percentage or a per-firm count. Business Today's coverage adds that 25 firms recruited for the first time and that international offers rose to 30 from 26. So the verified picture is: MBB are present, volume is large, and the split is unpublished.
Where does the 37 percent consulting figure come from?
Several prep sites quote consulting at 37 percent of the Class of 2026, technology at 28 percent and BFSI at 12 percent. The one we can trace is the IMS India comparison, which cites no source for it. The same page lists 1,171 offers and a batch of 812, which does not match ISB's 1,117 and 808. Its own offers-per-student figure of 1.38 matches ISB's numbers (1,117 divided by 808 is 1.38), so the 1,171 looks like a typo.
Treat 37 percent as a plausible estimate, not a reported statistic. Even if it is right, consulting is a wide bucket that includes Accenture, Big 4 advisory arms and delivery centres alongside the three strategy firms. Our breakdown of ISB consulting placements by firm type covers that distinction in more depth.
What does the PGP YL cohort tell us about MBB share?
The only public MBB number comes from the Young Leaders programme, and it concerns internships, not final jobs. In ISB's founding PGP YL summer placements release (28 November 2025), the cohort received over 175 internship offers from 38 companies. Consulting was 47% of offers. Accenture gave 37, and McKinsey, Bain and BCG gave 19 combined.
The arithmetic is ours: 19 of 175 is about 11% of offers, and Accenture alone is about 21%. Even in the most consulting-heavy cohort ISB has, the three strategy firms are roughly one offer in nine. The average prior work experience in that cohort was 11 months, versus about four years in the PGP. So you cannot scale the 11% to the full-time class. It is an upper-bound signal about how consulting-heavy a young cohort can look, not an MBB share for the PGP.
What actually changed between 2025 and 2026?
Verified changes are modest and mostly about pay and breadth. Average CTC rose about 11%, which implies a prior-year average near Rs 33.6 lakh (our arithmetic from ISB's figures). International offers moved from 26 to 30. First-time recruiters numbered 25. Career mobility was high: 67% moved to a new industry and 69% to a new function.
What you cannot claim is that MBB "seats are up" or that the pool "got more selective on pedigree". No ISB document supports either statement. If a consultant tells you otherwise, ask for the primary source.
How can you check the MBB question yourself?
Ask ISB directly. Admissions and the Career Advancement Services office field questions from admitted candidates, and alumni in your target firm will usually tell you how many of their batch joined. Compare two or three batches before you form a view, because a single year of recruiting can swing on one firm's hiring cycle. Written answers from ISB beat any prep-site number, including ours.
What does this mean if you are an IT services engineer?
You are the largest applicant group and you are aiming at the narrowest slice. Plan around the realistic distribution: a strong consulting offer at Accenture, Deloitte, EY or a boutique is the common outcome, and a strategy-house offer is the exception. The people who convert usually arrive with a client-facing or analytical pivot already underway, not a generic "delivery to strategy" story. A weak essay on career goals costs you more than any shift in recruiter mix.
What does this mean if you are a CA or a domain lateral?
Your consulting case is often easier than you expect, because firms value a pre-built lens in finance, healthcare or operations. The risk is the reverse: undersell the pivot and you get slotted back into an audit-adjacent role. State the consulting intent early in your essays and interview answers. What this means for Indian applicants
Decide on ISB using the numbers ISB stands behind: 1,117 offers for 808 students, Rs 37.29 lakh average, 67% industry switch. Do not pay for the promise of an MBB seat that no public document quantifies. If MBB is your only acceptable outcome, build a profile that earns it before you apply, and keep a Big 4 or advisory outcome as the honest base case. The full process, from the GMAT to the interview, is in our ISB PGP admissions guide. To test where your profile sits against that bar, our profile evaluation is the right first step, and the MBA and MiM service covers the wider application plan.
Common questions applicants are asking
How many people does McKinsey hire from ISB? ISB does not publish a per-firm final placement count. The only public figure is 19 combined internship offers from McKinsey, Bain and BCG to the PGP YL cohort in 2025.
What percentage of ISB students get consulting jobs? ISB's release does not give a percentage. A figure of about 37% circulates for Class of 2026 but is not sourced to ISB.
Is Accenture bigger than MBB at ISB? On the evidence, yes. Accenture made over 100 offers in Class of 2026, and 37 internship offers to PGP YL against 19 for the three strategy firms combined.
Are ISB placements better in 2026 than 2025? Average CTC rose about 11% and international offers rose from 26 to 30. Whether MBB hiring rose is not stated by ISB.
