You are a mechanical, civil or electrical engineer with four or five years at a manufacturer, an EPC firm or a utility, and you keep reading that ISB is the way into product management. You are not a software person, so you wonder whether a PM job is realistic or whether you are borrowing someone else's story. This post answers the questions that core-engineering applicants actually ask, using the public data for the Class of 2026 and flagging where no public data exists.
Is ISB full of engineers, and does that help or hurt you?
It is full of engineers. GMAC's Class of 2026 profile shows 826 students, an average of about four years of work experience, an average age of 26, and 54 percent with an engineering undergraduate degree. Commerce, finance and accounting backgrounds make up 21 percent and business 9 percent.
That cuts two ways. Engineering is not a differentiator at ISB; it is the default. But the figure also tells you the admissions committee is comfortable with engineers, and that the batch you join will be full of classmates who are also trying to leave their first job. The profile does not split engineers by branch, so how many come from core disciplines versus computer science is unknown.
Do ISB graduates actually move into product management?
Some do, and ISB's own student stories show the route. In a Poets&Quants profile of a PGP Class of 2026 student, a computer science graduate from NIT Rourkela had already worked as a product manager at Goldman Sachs for about 4.5 years, leading a payroll transformation across 40,000 employees in 25 countries. She came to ISB to grow in product, not to enter it.
That is the pattern to take seriously. The class-level placement coverage does not give a product management share for 2026. Business Today reports 1,117 offers, an average of Rs 37.29 lakh and technology recruiters including Amazon, Google, Razorpay and Uber, but no function-wise split. We unpack what can and cannot be said in our ISB tech product management placements analysis.
How common is a career switch at ISB?
Very common. Inside IIM's coverage of the Class of 2026 reports that 67 percent of students switched industries and 69 percent switched functions, from 1,117 offers rolled out to 808 students. Switching is the norm, not the exception, so a move from a plant or a site into a product role is not unusual in itself.
What that statistic does not say is which switches were into product management, or how many of those switchers had a software background. Do not read it as evidence that a core engineer has equal odds at a PM seat. It shows only that the programme and its recruiters are built for people changing lanes.
If you are a mechanical, civil or electrical engineer at a core firm
Your honest challenge is not the MBA; it is the evidence trail. A recruiter reading a PM résumé looks for proof that you owned a decision about what to build, for whom, and measured whether it worked. Core roles often hide this because the output is a plant, a bridge or a bill of materials, not a feature.
Look for the product inside your job. A manufacturing engineer who redesigned a component with a customer complaint log, a power-sector engineer who built an internal dashboard or an energy-monitoring tool, a civil engineer who ran a client-facing digital project: these are product-shaped stories. Write them with a customer, a constraint, a trade-off and a number. Our guide to ISB for engineers pivoting careers covers how to frame this in essays.
If you are an IT services engineer
You have the opposite problem. You are close to technology but far from the decision. Delivery on a client account is not product ownership, and recruiters can tell. The same test applies: what did you decide, and what changed because of it? If the honest answer is "I executed a spec", spend the next year taking on a requirements, analytics or internal-tool role before you apply, not after.
What does the ISB programme itself add?
It adds structure, a network and recruiter access, not a PM credential. The PGP is a one-year general management programme. Separately, ISB offers a 16-week online product management certificate delivered with Emeritus at a listed fee of Rs 1,59,900. That is a standalone course, not part of the PGP, and it is a different decision from the MBA.
If product management is your main reason for the MBA, be careful. The class-level data supports consulting and technology as the big recruiting areas, with product as one function among several. Our companion piece on whether PM roles at ISB are actually growing shows why a PM-only thesis carries real risk.
What this means for Indian applicants
First, treat the 54 percent engineering share as a baseline, not an edge. Your application has to answer a narrower question: what product decision did you own? Second, build the evidence in your current job before the application window, not in the essay. Third, write a second-best outcome you would accept, such as technology consulting, analytics or a strategy role at a product company, because the public data cannot tell you your odds of a PM offer.
Read how the process works in our ISB PGP admissions guide, and get an honest assessment of how your core-engineering story reads through a profile evaluation.
Common questions applicants are asking
Can a non-software engineer become a product manager after ISB? It is possible, but no public source gives the success rate. The route depends on showing product-shaped work from your pre-MBA job.
Does ISB help with PM placements? ISB has technology recruiters such as Amazon, Google, Razorpay and Uber on its 2026 list. Function-level PM numbers for 2026 are not published in the coverage we reviewed.
Is a CS degree required for ISB product management? No. 54 percent of the class are engineers and 30 percent come from commerce, finance or business backgrounds. Degree is not the filter; evidence of ownership is.
Should I do the ISB product management certificate instead? It costs a fraction of the MBA and takes 16 weeks, but it does not give you the PGP's recruiting access. They solve different problems.
