IIM Ahmedabad's admission formula gives CAT only forty percent of the weight, and most Indian applicants train as if it were ninety

IIM Ahmedabad Admission Criteria 2026: The Weights Indian Applicants Should Know

If you are a Bengaluru engineer staring at a 99.2 CAT mock score and a 7.4 CGPA from a tier-2 college, the question keeping you up is not whether you can crack CAT. It is whether IIM Ahmedabad will even read your file once you do. The honest answer hides inside the iim ahmedabad admission criteria for the 2026-28 batch: a published two-stage formula where CAT carries far less weight than the months you spent on mocks would suggest. This post breaks the formula apart, line by line, in the order the institute applies it.

What IIM Ahmedabad actually published for PGP 2026-28

IIM Ahmedabad runs admissions in two stages, and each stage uses a different scoring sheet. The institute publishes both on its official MBA admissions page, and any post that quotes a single number has flattened a two-stage process into one.

Stage one is shortlisting for the Analytical Writing Test and Personal Interview. The Composite Score here is 65 percent normalised CAT 2025 score plus 35 percent Application Rating. That Application Rating is itself a small formula: class 10 marks, class 12 marks, bachelor's CGPA, work experience, and a gender-diversity component. Per Shiksha's tracking of the 2026-28 criteria, CAT 2025 minimum cutoffs were also raised this cycle: 95 overall and 85 sectional for General and EWS, 90 and 80 for OBC, and category-adjusted lower thresholds for SC, ST, and PwD.

Stage two is final selection. The weights here look completely different: 50 percent Personal Interview, 25 percent CAT score, 15 percent Application Rating (the same one used in stage one), 10 percent AWT. Careers360's selection-process breakdown confirms these stage-two numbers for PGP 2026-28.

Average the two stages and CAT lands somewhere near 40 percent of total influence on whether you wear the IIMA badge in 2026. The interview is half of stage two, which is the half that hands out the offer. Most Indian applicants train as if CAT were 90 percent.

The Application Rating: where 35 percent and 15 percent quietly live

The Application Rating is the most under-read part of the iim ahmedabad admission criteria. It runs through both stages. In stage one it is 35 percent of your shortlisting score. In stage two it is 15 percent of your final selection score. Per InsideIIM's selection-criteria writeup, the rating uses normalised scores in five buckets: class 10 percentage, class 12 stream and percentage, bachelor's discipline and CGPA, work experience in months, and gender-diversity points.

The structural truth this hides: your academic record from the year you were 15 still counts at IIM Ahmedabad in the year you are 27. There is no surgery for class 10 marks. The CGPA bucket is normalised across disciplines, so a 7.4 from an engineering programme is not the same input as a 7.4 from a commerce or humanities programme. Bengaluru and Pune engineers who assume their stream is "harder" sometimes find the bucket maths does not reward that the way they expected. iQuanta's selection-criteria explainer walks through the bucket maths with the published score charts.

Work experience caps at three years at IIM Ahmedabad for full credit. A 24-month tenure scores almost the same as a 36-month tenure for the rating; a 48-month tenure does not score more than a 36-month one, and may signal that you waited too long. The gender-diversity component awards a fixed score to women candidates, which compresses the gap between a male engineer with a 99.6 percentile and a female engineer with a 98.4. This is published policy, not gossip.

If you are reading this with a strong CAT-mock trajectory and a thin 10 plus 12 plus CGPA record, the work to do now is on the interview and the AWT, not on pushing your mock from 99.2 to 99.6. The marginal percentile point will not move your Application Rating.

The two stages in plain weights, side by side

Below is the same data the institute and Shiksha publish, but laid out so a Bengaluru applicant can read it in one minute and stop scrolling.

| Component | Stage 1 (Shortlist for AWT-PI) | Stage 2 (Final selection) | |---|---|---| | CAT 2025 score | 65 percent | 25 percent | | Application Rating (10, 12, CGPA, work-ex, gender) | 35 percent | 15 percent | | Personal Interview | not used | 50 percent | | Analytical Writing Test (AWT) | not used | 10 percent |

The same components are weighted differently in the two stages, which is why it is meaningless to say "CAT is X percent" without naming the stage. CAT is the gate to the interview room. The interview is the gate to the offer letter.

A second table that almost nobody publishes: the minimum qualifying CAT cutoffs that gate entry into stage one at all. Per Careers360:

| Category | Overall percentile | Each sectional (VARC, DILR, QA) | |---|---|---| | General and EWS | 95 | 85 | | NC-OBC | 90 | 80 | | SC | 75 | 65 | | ST | 60 | 50 | | PwD | 85 | 75 |

These are qualifying, not calling. The actual percentile required for a PI call from IIM Ahmedabad has historically run several points above qualifying, because the Composite Score still has to compete with everyone else's. We discuss what a realistic calling cutoff looks like in the related post on the 95-percentile cutoff jump.

If you are an IT services engineer from a tier-2 college targeting IIM A

The blunt assessment: your Application Rating will likely sit in the middle third. You are competing with the same archetype in every cohort. Two levers actually move:

The first is the interview score, which is 50 percent of stage two. If you walk in with two specific career inflection moments (a project where you owned an outcome with a number attached, a decision you took that ran counter to your manager's instinct), you are no longer the average IT services applicant. We have written about how to structure that career story in the walk-me-through-your-resume guide. The institute publishes that interview panels look for clarity, reflection, and consistency across the AWT and the PI, which is harder when the two assessments are 60 minutes apart and you have been preparing for one of them.

The second is the AWT, which is 10 percent and the cheapest place to gain rating differential. Most applicants spend 200 hours on CAT for a marginal percentile point and 20 minutes practising the AWT. A clean, well-argued 30-minute essay routinely sorts the top quartile from the rest in stage two scoring.

If you are a non-engineer from Mumbai or Kolkata targeting IIM A

The structural advantage you have is that IIM Ahmedabad's Application Rating buckets reward diversity of academic background as a normalised input. The structural disadvantage is that some commerce and humanities applicants assume a 99 percentile CAT is sufficient because their profile already "stands out". It is not, because the Composite Score in stage one still weights CAT at 65 percent.

Practical translation: a non-engineer with a 99.0 CAT and an 8.7 bachelor's CGPA generally clears stage one more easily than an engineer with the same numbers. But the stage-two interview will probe whether you have the quantitative comfort the curriculum demands. Reading the AWT-PI section of the IIM Ahmedabad admission process step by step is a fast way to see what the panel actually asks.

If you are a reapplicant with one or two PI dings

Two things are different the second time. Your Application Rating is unchanged unless you finished a higher degree, a major certification, or a substantive job change. Your interview file at IIM Ahmedabad now includes the previous year's panel notes, which is publicly acknowledged in the institute's PI policy and elaborated in iQuanta's selection-criteria explainer.

The lever is the diagnosis: why did the previous PI not convert? Was it the goal articulation, the post-MBA plan, the calmness under pressure, the framing of your weakness question, the AWT? Reapplicants who treat the second cycle as "try harder on CAT" rarely convert. The ones who do a structured PI post-mortem and adjust the interview-prep approach see better odds. This is what our profile evaluation sessions are built for: most reapplicant calls open by reconstructing exactly which slice of the iim ahmedabad admission criteria the candidate left points on.

What the formula tells you to do this week

The published weights are a budget. If you have 100 hours of prep time before the CAT 2025 result is out, the formula says: keep CAT prep as a maintenance level (you cannot move your percentile dramatically in 100 hours), spend 40 hours on AWT structure and practice (10 percent of stage two for 5 percent of your effort), and 60 hours on PI rehearsal with two or three real mentors (50 percent of stage two). Most applicants invert that ratio.

If you are not yet at the CAT-cutoff threshold, the order is different: clear the qualifying cutoff first, because no PI weight matters until you do. The qualifying cutoff is now 95 General overall, 85 sectional, as Shiksha and Careers360 both confirm for the 2026-28 batch. Below that, the formula does not run on your application at all.

Common questions Indian applicants are asking

Is CAT really only 25 percent of the final selection at IIM Ahmedabad?

In stage two, yes. CAT 2025 normalised score carries 25 percent weight in final selection. But CAT also gates entry into stage one, where it carries 65 percent of the shortlisting Composite Score. Both stages matter. The composite influence of CAT on whether you receive an offer is roughly 40 percent if you average the two stages, which is why training as if CAT were 90 percent of the decision is a misallocation of months.

What is the minimum CAT cutoff for IIM Ahmedabad in 2026?

Per the official 2026-28 policy, the qualifying CAT 2025 cutoffs are 95 overall and 85 sectional for General and EWS, 90 and 80 for NC-OBC, 75 and 65 for SC, 60 and 50 for ST, and 85 and 75 for PwD. Qualifying does not equal a PI call. The calling percentile typically runs several points above qualifying once the full Composite Score competition closes.

Does work experience matter at IIM Ahmedabad?

It is one bucket inside the Application Rating, capped at three years of full-time work for full credit. Two to three years is the institute's sweet spot in the rating maths. More than three years is not penalised, but it also does not add rating points, and the panel may ask why an applicant with five or six years is choosing a two-year residential PGP rather than the PGPX.

Does the 10 plus 12 score still count after a strong CAT?

Yes. Class 10 and class 12 percentages each sit inside the Application Rating, which is 35 percent of stage one and 15 percent of stage two. A perfect CAT 2025 score does not erase a weak 10 plus 12 record at IIM Ahmedabad. It can outpace it in stage one, but stage two re-introduces the Application Rating with fresh weight, so academics travel all the way through the pipeline.

Is there a separate criterion for women applicants at IIM A?

The Application Rating includes a gender-diversity component that awards fixed points to women candidates. The institute publishes this. The intent is to compress the male-female composite gap at the shortlist stage, particularly in a CAT pool where male-female participation has historically been skewed.
