If you spent the last month telling yourself you would register for NMAT "next week" and then watched October 10 slide past, you can stop panicking. GMAC has moved the NMAT 2026 registration deadline to October 25, and the slot-booking deadline moves with it. For an IT services engineer in Pune with a CAT attempt on November 29 and no backup plan, or a Bengaluru analyst who underestimated how long a first mock cycle takes, this is a second door that was about to close and now is not.
What GMAC actually changed
According to EduProspect's report of the GMAC notice, published on October 11, registration moved from October 10 to October 25, and slot booking moved to the same date. The test window itself has not moved: it still runs from November 2 to December 20, a span of 49 days. Shiksha's coverage confirms the extension and the original October 10 close, and PW's news desk carries the same dates.
Two details matter more than the headline. First, the standard registration lets you name up to five colleges for score reporting; more than five costs extra. Second, the NMAT registration is not a college application. You still apply separately on each institute's own portal, so the October 25 date protects your exam seat, not your admission file.
One caution on sourcing: these reports are secondary. The mba.com page I checked this morning returned an error rather than the notice, so confirm the dates on your own NMAT login before paying anything. The 2026 fee was not stated in any of the reports I could open. Last year the base fee was Rs 3,000 plus tax for the first attempt, as Careers360 reported for the 2025 cycle, but treat that as a reference point, not this year's price.
Is this extension a pattern?
It is, and that is the useful part. In 2025 the original close was October 10 and GMAC extended registration to October 18, with scheduling open until October 25 and the exam window running November 5 to December 19. In 2026 it has done the same thing again, only for longer, and with the booking deadline now identical to the registration deadline. Two years is a small sample, so do not build a strategy on a third extension. The practical lesson is narrower: do not spend the whole fortnight. Applicants who register early in the extended window get the best November slots, while those who wait until October 24 pick from whatever is left.
If you are a CAT aspirant who has been ignoring NMAT
Your CAT date is November 29, and your CAT result will not arrive until after most NMAT slots have been used. That ordering is the whole argument. NMAT lets you pick your date, so you can book a first sitting in the first or second week of November, before CAT, and a second in December if you want it. A score in hand before CAT day changes how you sit CAT: you are no longer playing a single high-variance Sunday with your entire year riding on it. Our earlier piece on NMAT as a route beyond CAT and SNAP lays out the mechanics; this extension simply gives you fifteen more days to act on it.
If you are a working professional with unpredictable travel
NMAT's self-scheduling is built for you. The risk is the calendar, not the content. Pick two candidate dates a week apart inside the November 2 to December 20 window and treat the second as insurance against a client escalation.
If you are targeting NMIMS or another school that publishes an NMAT cutoff
Check the school's own admission timeline before you rely on the extension. The reports say NMAT scores are accepted by more than 60 business schools including NMIMS, KJ Somaiya and TAPMI, but each runs its own application deadline. A sitting on December 15 may produce a score that arrives after your target school has reviewed files. Our note on applying to NMIMS alongside CAT covers how those timelines interact.
What this means for Indian applicants
The extension changes the arithmetic for three kinds of applicant, and leaves two untouched.
It helps the applicant who skipped NMAT because of a lapsed deadline and still has mock-test momentum. It helps the CAT-only applicant who wants a score on the board before November 29. It helps the person whose first-choice college accepts NMAT and who now has time to keep that option alive.
It does not help the applicant who is unprepared and hoping a score will appear by registering. NMAT is 108 questions across Language Skills, Quantitative Skills and Logical Reasoning, 36 each, in 120 minutes, per the EduProspect report. The sectional structure punishes weak pacing, and a poor first attempt is a recorded attempt. It also does not help the applicant whose real gap is the profile rather than the score. A good NMAT number gets you an interview call; it does not write your work story for you.
If you are unsure which category you are in, spend an hour on a profile evaluation before paying for a slot, and if you are weighing Indian programmes against a global MBA or MiM, our MBA and MiM admissions consulting maps both tracks side by side. If a school's interview is where you expect to struggle, the interview preparation service is the next logical step once your score is in.
The sensible move: register this week, book a November slot you can protect, and keep December in reserve. If you are weighing this route against an ISB-style GMAT path, our ISB entrance test options post lays out that fork.
Common questions applicants are asking
What is the NMAT 2026 registration last date now? October 25, 2026, per the GMAC extension reported on October 11. Slot booking closes on the same date, so you must complete both before then. The earlier deadline was October 10. Log in to your NMAT account to confirm, because the secondary reports are not the official notice.
Can I still register for NMAT if I missed October 10? Yes, until October 25 under the extension. You also need to book a slot within the November 2 to December 20 test window before that date.
How many colleges can I send my NMAT score to? Up to five in the standard registration, according to the reports. More than five requires an additional fee, so list your realistic targets first.
Does NMAT registration count as a college application? No. It only secures your exam. You must apply to NMIMS, KJ Somaiya, TAPMI or any other target school separately through their admission portals, and school deadlines do not move because GMAC moved its own.
