If you are a Bengaluru IT services engineer sitting with an 82 percentile mock, a June sectional slump in DILR, and the CAT 2026 notification tab open since Saturday morning, the honest question is not whether to register. Registration is a Rs. 2,600 decision. The honest question is whether the profile you have on July 27 can be turned into an interview call in April 2027. This post is written for exactly that reader.
What the July 25 notification actually says
IIM Indore released the CAT 2026 notification on Friday, July 25, 2026 at iimcat.ac.in. The specifics that matter:
- Exam date: Sunday, November 29, 2026, in three sessions across roughly 170 test cities.
- Registration window: August 3 (10 AM IST) to September 20, 2026.
- Application fee: Rs. 2,600 for General, EWS, and NC-OBC. Rs. 1,300 for SC, ST, and PwD.
- Structure: 68 questions, 120 minutes, three sections (VARC, DILR, QA), 40 minutes each, no section-switch.
- Marking: plus three for correct, minus one for wrong on MCQs, zero on TITA. No negative marking on TITA.
The registration window is 48 days, confirmed by Careers360. The June anticipation date of August 1 turned out to be off by two days. Nothing else in the exam format changed for this cycle.
Why "should I register" is the wrong question
Every year, roughly 3 lakh aspirants register for CAT and roughly 40,000 receive an interview call at an IIM. The Rs. 2,600 is a rounding error against the opportunity cost of the year. The real question is whether you are attempting CAT 2026 to convert, or to buy an option on 2027.
If you are attempting to convert, the mock schedule you follow between August 3 and November 22 (the last useful mock date) is the entire game. If you are buying an option on 2027, you should still register because a legitimate CAT 2026 score, even at 85th percentile, gives you a baseline that non-IIM programmes (SPJIMR, MDI, IIFT, XLRI, ISB early entry) will accept. The ISB early entry route in particular treats a valid CAT score as a working ticket for the two-year deferred admit window.
The point is: you are not deciding yes or no to Rs. 2,600. You are deciding what CAT 2026 is for.
If you are an IT services engineer at 82 percentile
You have two things working against you: an ORM-heavy profile and a mock trend that peaks in DILR. The first is a positioning problem for the interview stage. The second is a scoring problem for the next 90 days.
The scoring problem is fixable if you are honest about time. Between August 3 and November 22, you have 111 days. Working IT services hours (55 to 65 hours a week), realistic daily study time is 3 hours weekday and 6 hours weekend, or roughly 32 hours a week. That is 508 total hours. The 82-to-95 percentile gap in DILR is roughly 180 focused hours, mostly on set-solvability judgment, not on more sets. The other 300 hours should be split: 120 on VARC (RC accuracy, not speed), 100 on QA (arithmetic and geometry, not modern math), 80 on full mocks and analysis.
The positioning problem is not fixable in November. It needs the WAT and interview season, and it is where profile evaluation for CAT aspirants matters more than an extra mock. If your CGPA is below 7 and you are ORM-only, the IIM Ahmedabad 95 percentile cutoff jump means IIM-A is unlikely regardless of score. That is not a defeat; it is a calibration.
If you are a CA or CFA with strong quant
Your risk is the mirror image. You will likely clear the QA sectional cutoff comfortably and you will likely underperform in VARC because your reading habit is IFRS standards, not literary fiction. The 90-day plan for you is inverted: cap QA prep at 60 hours, spend 200 hours on VARC (specifically inferential RC, not comprehension RC), and 150 hours on DILR. The remaining 100 hours are for mocks.
CAs also carry a specific interview risk: the "why not Big Four partnership" question is now standard at IIM-A, IIM-B, and IIM-K interviews, per the 2026 cycle question banks. If you cannot answer it in 90 seconds without sounding either dismissive of your current path or evasive about your MBA motive, you should be drafting that answer this month, not in April.
What this means for Indian applicants
The CAT 2026 notification is not new information. What it does is start the clock on decisions that until Friday were still theoretical. Three concrete moves for the next seven days:
- Decide the target school list honestly, before you register. If you are targeting IIM-A, IIM-B, and IIM-C only, your minimum viable score is 99 plus percentile and your minimum viable profile is 8.5 CGPA with 24 or more months of quality work experience. If any of those inputs are missing, either widen the school list or accept that CAT 2026 is a rehearsal, not the show.
- Book the mock schedule now, not August 15. Every serious mock provider (IMS SIMCATs, TIME AIMCATs, iQuanta) publishes the mock calendar in the first week of August. If you register for mocks on August 15, you have already lost two full analysis cycles.
- Start the profile work in parallel, not after November. If your CV, story arc, and reasons-for-MBA are not drafted by October, the WAT-PI cycle in February will feel like a fire drill. A structured profile evaluation done in August is worth ten hours of mock analysis in April.
The applicants who convert are almost never the ones with the highest mock scores. They are the ones whose mock trajectory and profile positioning converge in the same 90-day window. That window opens on August 3.
Common questions applicants are asking
Is the CAT 2026 exam pattern changing? No. IIM Indore has kept the 68-question, 120-minute, three-section structure with 40 minutes per section, same as 2024 and 2025. Marking scheme is unchanged. Anyone selling you a new-pattern strategy is selling last year's content in a new wrapper.
Can I register for CAT 2026 if I am in my final year? Yes. Final-year graduation candidates can apply, subject to producing the degree certificate by June 30, 2027 if selected. The IIM Indore notification confirms 45 percent marks for SC, ST, PwD and 50 percent for others as the minimum eligibility, per MBAUniverse.
How many CAT attempts are allowed? CAT itself has no lifetime attempt cap; you can attempt every year. But the IIMs read the same profile every year, so repeated attempts without a materially changed profile do not improve the interview probability. If this is your third attempt with the same story, the story is the problem, not the score.
Should I take CAT and GMAT in the same season? Only if your target set genuinely spans both IIMs and international programmes. If it is IIM-only, the GMAT is a waste of Rs. 22,500 and 40 hours.
