Only 21% of Booth's class studied engineering, so why do Indian engineers write like it

Chicago Booth MBA from India: What the Analytical Brand Really Selects For

If you are an Indian engineer with a 735 GMAT and a spreadsheet of Booth admits open in another tab, you probably assume the word "analytical" means your profile is the default fit. It is not. Booth's Class of 2027 has 635 students from 5,876 applications, and only 21% of them studied engineering as undergraduates. Business majors are 26% and economics majors are 24% (Clear Admit, November 2025). The brand is analytical. The class is not an engineering convention, and Indian files that read like one tend to stall.

What the Class of 2027 numbers say about the reader

Start with the headline figures. Average GMAT is 736 on the classic scale and 670 on the Focus Edition. Average work experience is 5 years, average undergraduate GPA is 3.6, and 42% of the class submitted the GRE. International students make up 37% of the class from 63 countries, and women are 41% (Clear Admit). Applications rose 13% over the Class of 2026, which means 635 seats now sit against roughly 9 applicants per matriculant.

Now read the pre-MBA industries: consulting 23%, financial services 22%, nonprofit and government 12%, technology 10%, private equity and venture capital 8%. Technology, where most Indian applicants work, is 10%. The Indian applicant is not competing against a class of peers. The Indian applicant is competing against a class of economists, bankers, consultants and public-sector people, and the file has to show reasoning that those readers respect.

This is the contrarian point. "Analytical" at Booth does not mean "can build a model." Every Indian engineer can build a model. It means the applicant can state a claim, say what evidence would change their mind, and make a decision under uncertainty. That is the skill the economics-heavy faculty teach, and it is what the admit reader screens for.

The essay format changed, and it punishes the old Indian template

Booth's current application asks for four short answers of 300 characters each: the immediate post-MBA goal, the long-term goal, an uploaded image with its significance to you, and a fun fact. There is an optional 300-word essay and a 300-word reapplicant question (MBAmission). For a deeper look at the format, see our post on what Indian applicants must rewrite for the 300-character essays.

The format is the selection mechanism. At 300 characters you cannot narrate. You can only choose. A goal such as "lead product strategy at a fintech like Stripe" survives. A goal such as "transition into a leadership role in a dynamic global organisation" does not. The old Indian template of four paragraphs of backstory had a hiding place for vagueness. This one has none.

If you are an IT services or product engineer

Your risk is not your GMAT. A 736 average means 720 to 750 is the middle of the class, and the Indian engineering pool clusters there. Your risk is sameness. Consulting is 36.7% of Booth's 2025 graduating class by industry, and technology is 14.1%, with a median base salary of $175,000 and a median sign-on of $30,000 (Booth 2025 Employment Report). Engineers who write "consulting" in both goal fields join the largest queue in the pool.

The engineer file that separates names a function inside a sector, a firm tier, and one piece of evidence from your own work that you tested the thesis. For example, pricing analytics for an Indian SaaS exporter, with the margin impact you measured, is a claim. "Data-driven decision making" is a mood.

If you are a CA, CFA or banking associate

Finance applicants are better matched to the class mix, because economics and financial services together are close to half of the pre-MBA backgrounds. That cuts both ways. Investment banking is 8.3% of the 2025 industry outcomes, and the reader has seen every version of "move from credit to private equity." Your edge is a specific market view you can defend, such as Indian infrastructure debt or climate-linked lending, rather than a title ladder.

If you are a non-engineer from the social sector, media or the civil services

Nonprofit and government is 12% of the Class of 2027, a larger slice than technology. Indian applicants from this background rarely apply to Booth because the brand looks quantitative. The data says the opposite: the school reads for rigorous reasoning, not for a particular undergraduate degree. If you can show a policy decision you analysed and a number that moved, you are more differentiated here than you would be at a school that markets itself on social impact.

The career math and the visa overlay for 2027 entrants

Booth reported that 89.1% of 2025 graduates held full-time offers within three months, and 95% of offers were in the United States (Booth). That is a US-career product, so the visa rules matter. The $100,000 H-1B payment applies to new petitions filed after 21 September 2025 for beneficiaries outside the United States, but USCIS clarified in October 2025 that people in F-1 status inside the country who are eligible to change status do not pay it (BakerHostetler). The exposure that remains is the lottery itself and any role that requires travelling abroad before the petition is filed. We cover the modelling in our H-1B fee impact post for Indian MBA applicants. If US work authorisation is uncertain, a Booth admit still pays off through the consulting and finance routes that sponsor routinely, but do not underwrite the loan on a 100% US outcome.

What this means for Indian applicants

Treat "analytical" as a reasoning test, not a credential. Before you write, answer three questions in one sentence each: what role do you want, what evidence from your career says you can do it, and what would make you change the plan. If you cannot answer in plain words, the 300-character fields will expose it. Pair that with a realistic budget: two years at Booth is a six-figure dollar commitment once living costs are included, and the offer data above is the best predictor of whether the loan clears.

Our MBA Abroad hub compares Booth with the other M7 and European programmes on class data and outcomes. If you are early in your career, the MBA and MIM comparison shows when a pre-experience master's is the better first step. For a read on whether your profile looks like a Booth file, try a profile evaluation, and once you have drafts, our application editing service tightens them to the character limit.

Common questions Indian applicants are asking

Is Booth good for Indian engineers? Yes, but not because it is analytical. Engineers are 21% of the Class of 2027, behind business and economics majors. Engineers who frame their experience as decisions and evidence do well. Engineers who describe tools and technologies do not stand out.

What GMAT score do I need for Booth? The Class of 2027 averages 736 on the classic scale and 670 on the Focus Edition, and 42% of the class submitted the GRE. A score within about 20 points of the average keeps you competitive. Beyond that, essays and goals decide the file.

Does Booth hire for consulting or finance? Both, with consulting dominant. Consulting is 36.7% of industries and 37.8% of functions in the 2025 report, with investment banking at 8.3% of industries and technology at 14.1%. The median base salary is $175,000.

Can I get a US job after Booth without the $100,000 H-1B fee? USCIS guidance from October 2025 says F-1 students in the US who are eligible to change status are not required to pay it. Your own case depends on timing and employer, so confirm with the employer's immigration counsel before accepting an offer.

Should I apply to Booth or Kellogg? Choose by career goal and cost, not brand. Consulting and finance goals favour Booth's recruiting scale. Product and marketing goals often favour Kellogg. Read the head-to-head post linked above.
